I only brought $50 with me this time as I went a little nutty last time and didn't have money to eat for a week. I got :

    2004 Westward Mint Set
    1972 Proof Set
    1982 Proof Set
    1983 Proof set
A penny blank planchet (which under a loop is just a ground down penny)

    And this nice 1883 nickel

I don't think it's MS, there are about 20 little scratches all going the same way. I going to go with a wipe not a real cleaning. The surfaces are prooflike but it's probably been dipped because of the 2 waterspots on the front and the bottom half of the reverse look like a regular coin it's age should look like. I payed VG money for it so even if it's damaged or cleaned I can't go wrong. Without the wipe and dip I would say it looks MS-65 or 66 but since it's been cleaned who knows. Maybe I should buy a Dansco 7070 album and start a typeset collection with it.

Nice looking Liberty Nickel except for the spots. It looks MS to me.

What do you mean the cent planchet "is just a ground down penny". Do you mean someone actually ground down a cent? Blank planchets have lots of scratches on them normally. Yours looks like a normal blank planchet.

A long time world coin & morgan & franklin collector, I find myself drawn more & more to the V nickels lately. I may start pursuing a collection of them myself. I think if every active member of Coin Talk would send me $50 each I could probably put together a really nice set.

I think I can make out some of the lincoln memorial and some words around the rim. It may be real but he had 3 and he was selling them for 0.75. I a sucker for something different, especially if it's dirt cheap.

I just looked at the penny again and took some pictures. I don't have any way to weight it but I will ask some of my friends if they have a scale. Here is front and back. The scratches go the same way on both sides but the edge of the coin looks cracked like acid ate away at the middle. Any help from you guys is greatly appreciated.

First let me ask you a question - how does a coin manage to be struck on one side only ? It can't happen. Second, given the date of the coin the blank side cannot have been caused by acid because the copper plating is very, very thin - any acid would expose the zinc underneath. Same for being ground down on one side - can't happen with that date.

So what do you have there then ? Only one possibility remains - a magicians coin.

So sorry, I put a regular penny next to the blank for reference. The 1st pic is one side of the blank penny next to the reference. The second picture is the other side of the blank next to the reference penny. Sorry about any confusion.

If you have windows vista you can double click on the pic to get the picture in its own window and really zoom in on it by pressing CTRL and the "+" together. Not sure if it works on win XP.

Fair enough, bad assumption on my part. Bit to determine if it is a blank planchet or not you nust weigh it as you have been told. If you don't have a scale, take it to a jewelry store.

I'd say it is not a blank planchet. The rims aren't right for either a blank or a planchet. A blank has no raised rim and a planchet has a slightly rounded edge with a bulged "rim" in just slightly from the edge. This has some kind of rim right at the edge of the coin.
