I’m fairly new to coin collecting and have been primarily collecting US coins (sets of dimes, nickels, pennies, state quarters, etc). I also have purchased some cheap, bulk lots from Ebay for starting my world coin collection. Recently I bought BU commemorative Canadian quarters from 1999 and 2000. I was wondering if anyone could suggest more such interesting and affordable coin sets from around the world that would be a good addition to a collection. I came across one from Somalia featuring Chinese zodiac years…I’ve been thinking about getting that one. Apart from that, I’m pretty lost. Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.
Really, and quite simply, collect what attracts you. There are hundreds of styles of coins, and whatever is most appealing to you is what you should go after. At least that is my 2 Lincolns
Yes, that's the ultimate goal. I'm just looking for suggestions about any interesting sets....the idea is to possibly come to know about coins that I might not otherwise come across...I'm so new to the hobby that I've not developed a liking towards a specific coin type yet...my current goal is to get as many different kinds as I can, and possibly unique/commemorative sets. Once again, any ideas are welcome.
I've collected a few Proof/Mint sets from around the world from my birthyear. Proof Sets: England, Falkland Islands, Canada, Australia Mint Sets: Singapore And I used to have Mint sets from the Soviet Union and Israel (but I'm selling those for some extra $). So just some ideas
Why not take a trip down to your local coin dealer ask if they have any forign coins they can sell you by the Lb and buy some Take them home and have some fun sorting through the pile LOL A lot of what you get might well be rubbish but you should find some bits to interest you amongst them all. Ebay is of course another venue for buying like this.
There is no exclusive coin dealer around here!! There are couple of antique stores that may or may not carry coins. I bought 2 lots from ebay...got some specimens covering various countries...one of the lots was of uncirculated coins...so that was pretty good. But all that is very random, and I'm more on a lookout for sets....pre-grouped into sets rather than me grouping them.
World mint sets are often a great deal. People didn't save many of the coins minted between 1945 and 2000 but the mints made BU sets of coins. Many of these aren't listed in Krause. Part of thje reason is that many times it was central banks that packaged and marketed the sets but sometimes the mintages are just very low. These sets get little attention and also can sell for almost nothing. While some of the rarest coins in these sets have skyrocketed in price in the last few years there are still lots of rare coins in these sets that can be had for a song.
