Coin rolls from banks

Do you know how come that a bunch of rolls of circulated coins (5 rolls of cents and 4 rolls of quarters) I got from a bank contain the exact same date/mintmark? The coins are obviously circulated (there are scratches/fingerprints/other wear on most of them) but all of them are 2005-D for cents and California 2005-D for quarters. It wouldn't be strange if these were mint rolls, but they are not. What gives? Does someone out there sort coins before they go into rolls? I did not think so...

I bet they are BU--the mint doesn't care about the coins and lets them get nickes and fingerprints--I opened a roll of BU TX-P's and right in the middle of the roll was a coin with a nice big fingerprint....

This is interesting indeed. Maybe someone got a whole bunch of those type coins and sorted out the poor quality ones to make some rolls of much better quality coins. I got three bankwrapped 05D cent rolls from the bank the other day and I am keeping one sealed since it is shot gunned and for one of them I took out all the really spotted and scratched ones and traded those poor cents with good ones from the 3rd roll and I plan on spending that.

Welllllll, somebody does. I have saved all of my change for many, many years, and I sort it all by date/mm before rolling them up and storing them away. This can be an educational pasttime as well - I have learned not to store a great deal of weight in my attic.

My question would be what makes you think they are circulated ? If they are all '05 coins and have the same mm - then the coins are likely uncirculated.

There is a difference between scratches & marks - and wear. It would be extremely rare to find uncirculated coins without scratches & marks. And yes you can find many UNC coins with fingerprints too.

Most assuredly there are dealers & collectors who search rolls & bags of UNC coins, pick out the choice examples - roll the rest up and sell them back to the bank.

Where do you think all those high grade examples in slabs come from ? They come from people searching rolls, bags & mint sets.

What threw me off was the wraps - they did not look like mint wraps, but rather some third party stuff you buy in a Kmart...

Very, very few of the uncirculated rolls ARE from the mint. The vast majority of UNC rolls are from the armored car companies and a few from the banks. Most come in the clear plastic rolls nowdays - some still in the paper rolls.

That would explain it. Thank you!

Thank you! This is an excellent article - it nicely dispells bunch of my misconceptions about rolls.
