I was just sitting here thinking about the small coin shows that are in my area and how everyone watches out for everyone else. I don't think there's been a coin robbery in my area for at least a few years. Well let's hope that's the case. Does anyone have any robberies to report in their area? I know this isn't a topic most of us want to talk about but it is a fact of life and anyone who carries large amounts of coins or gold has to at least plan well if not carry a gun and most likely both. I know the owners at my favorite store both carry guns. You can read what happened a couple of years ago at a coin show. http://www.allbusiness.com/services/business-services-miscellaneous-business/4227600-1.html
The problem here is that many such robberies go unnoticed. No one publicizes things that happen all the time. And in some areas crimes are so common, it really takes something big to make the news. For example I know of seveal dealers that have been robbed on the way home from shows. Similarily collectors too have been followed and robbed on the way home. Just not news worthy. In the Chicago area there are over 50,000 autos stolen per year. The murder rate is usually in the hundreds but that is only what is reported. Home invasions are as common as going shopping for some criminals. Many such criminals know they will be back out on the streets in few hours if caught doing a robbery unless they robbed someone important. Basically the crime rate is pending on where you live. I wouldn't be amazed at all if in some small town areas no one has been robbed after or before a coin show. I've been to small towns where people go to the store and leave their house doors open. Where I live those same doors have bars on them.
An assistant was unloading coins worth $4 million? Sounds like the dealer was a little careless. Its a shame it happened, but seems like one could easily take precautions like hiring a guard or two when there's that much money involved? Now smaller dealers might have a problem.
