There are several "hard copy" periodicals--magazines and tabloid newspapers--devoted to numismatics. I would like to know if any of you subscribe to--or at least read--these publications and what you think of them.
I subscribe to both Coin World and Coins magazines. I also get the Numismatist as a member of the ANA. They all have a good value in understanding our hobby/passion. I find the weekly nature of Coin World to be good for timely information on coins and industry that supports it. They also have good ongoing columns for various areas I'm interested in. Coins provides a nice monthly that I also like. The Numismatist tends to be more research oriented and educational, which fits with their charter.
I subscribe to CoinWorld and get their CoinValues magazine as well. As an ANA member, I also get the Numismatist.
I get Coin World, Coins & Coinage Magazine and I'll be getting The Numismatist as soon as I renew my ANA membership. I didnt like to but I let it expire for a while.
I like coin world. The post mistress does not like them becouse I do not check my mail as often as most and the box fills up real quick. told her to tear up all those letters from companies that try to sell you it cards and those that tell me I have won something and that should take care of that problem
Does anyone get this one - Coin News, which is published by Token Publishing in England. Here's a link; www.tokenpublishing.com . Aidan.
I would like thank all those who contributed to this thread (and those whose responses haven't come in yet). I think a lot of us have the same problem in that we don't know exactly what we want in a numismatic publication, but we feel vaguely that what's available isn't it. I'll buy a magazine now and then and although the ads, with their great photos, are worth looking at, there's no more than one or two articles that interest me in a given issue. I think maybe the fault is mine; maybe I'm not as interested in coins as I think I am. On the other hand, maybe numismatics is a rather thin subject. How far can you go in it before you run up against a stone wall of total boredom? I have a special feeling about Coins magazine. A long time ago (OK, it was 1966) I was a young, unpublished writer sending off fictional stories to various publications and getting back rejection slips. The first magazine to accept a story of mine--and pay for it--was Coins. (They used to run one piece of fiction in each issue, along with a good many factual articles.) But after all these years, I find that Coins and the other numismatic publications offer material only about 10 percent of which interests me. It may be my fault rather than theirs.
i read coin world and the numismatist...there are many specialty subjects you can go to...gobrecht journal, ect. there is also ans (american numismatic society) publications as well as the quarterly scholarly journals (can't remember the name offhand). you can broaden your interest in numismatics to ancient coins (a vast history to explore complete with real figures or mythological creatures and ancient civilizations), if you are interested in americana..political and historical with medals or civil war tokens, how about banknotes with the allegorical figures or trains and other motifs...beautiful printed art... there is much you can tie in depending on what you other interests are. if you are burned out, take a little time off..it is a hobby after all and should bring you enjoyment. most of your interests won't let you get away for long..good luck and if i can help with any info..just let me know....steve
You're no different than the rest of us. I don't think anybody has a deep interest in ALL of the articles in every issue. The thing you have to remember is that the magazine publishers have to try to keep everybody happy to keep them buying the magazines. So the best they can do is to place widely varied articles in each issue. Think about it - how many different types of collectors are there ? Now imagine trying to keep all of them happy or printing articles that all of them will find interesting. It's an impossible task. But if they can keep 10% happy this week and another 10% happy next week - and so on and so on - then thay have succeeded.
I don't subsribe to any coin mags or books but at most of the coin shows I go they have a table with copies of numerous magazines free. I always grab one of each. Of these I like Coin World the best. Numismatic News is not bad either and since free I really can't complain about any. There have been copies of many different ones at these shows but those two vanish first. Not many people around me have anything delivered in the mail that would disclose anything dealing with coins, guns, knives, currency or anything else of value. Just not a smart thing in some larger city areas to have something like that sticking out of a mailbox.
Greysheet, Greensheet and the occasional Bluesheet. I guess you can say I HAVE MY SHEET TOGETHER lol. I also get the Numismatist and Fun-topics and various other club publications. My sheets are stirctly working papers but I love to read the articles in other pubs...especially stuff that really smacks of the lure and romance that numismatics can bring. Every few years I'll re-subscribe to CW or NN but I don't have time to read them and always just give them away in the shop. tradernick
