I am looking for advice on what and where I can find a decent pad to place under my coins while admiring/inspecting. Right now I am just using a towel on my bench top. Are there actual pads made for this purpose, and if so, where can I find one? If not, what do you use? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Craig
I'm using a leather desk blotter (you know, one of those corporate-lookin' things) and covering it with a microfiber cloth used for cameras. Thick cloths, not those silky, flouncy things. Coins have never rolled away or banged on a hard surface. My coins don't even get a chance to touch that microfiber cloth. But it's there just in case.
Doesn't matter what you use really, soft and thick is the key. If you place your coin down on it you want to be able to pick it back up by he edges only and not having to slide or move the coin around even minutely to do that. So if the surface is soft and thick enough when you go to grasp the coin your fingertips can depress the surface slightly so that you can then grasp the coin's edges without moving the coin and causing slight hairlines.
I took an old wooden tray table apart and covered the top with a layer of batting and black felt (raided from the wife's sewing room). Portable and posh, it can be utilized in a variety locales..........
