Hey guys, I was experimenting with some image editing. I'd eventually like to have my entire collection presented in book plates of various resolutions for various purposes. Some of these pics are mine, some came from dealers, but I'm working on a new imaging set-up, and eventually hope to achieve the quality of Doug's pics...
Your images look very nice; however, what is your purpose behind a plate like you have presented? Is there a theme or is it just random? I can see a purpose behind a plate like this, say the First 12 Caesars for example.
Well, the purpose of the plates I'm working on today is just to become fluent with resizing and combining images, so yes, it's rather random. I've got different dates that aren't in any chronological order, imperials and provincial, bronze and silver. So this is just practice. I'd eventually like to publish a hard-copy version of my collection in a classical sylloge-type format: a list of descriptions and attributions, followed by plates, and I'd like all the pics of the coins to be the same size as the real coins, with additional 2X pics for the small ones. Why? I'm kind of a neat freak. I like it when things are impeccably organized. My wife gets on my case about sometimes, but only half-seriously. Women generally don't prefer slobs. That, and I can't afford to buy any coins today.
Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm kinda OCD too. "Everything has a place and everything in it's place" is my motto. I have what the guys used to refer to as a clean desk. My emails are filed away or discard immediately and my desktop, both on my computer and my desk, are clean and organized. So I understand what you are saying. What program are you using to put your plates together? It's an interesting idea, but it may be too much work for me considering the number of coins I own.
Thats me in every sentence. I cant even stand two days worth of dust on my desk or house in general. Nice set up though John. I know of a few collectors who go this route and have books made. It makes sense if you end up storing them in a SDB and dont wanna hassle keeping the collection of photographs on a tablet or computer. Photoshop does this kind of editing easily, same with GIMP and a few others. Its not hard really.
Bing, I'm using Paint.NET, which is a free download, similar to GIMP. I wouldn't want to do this with a huge collection either, but mine is fledgling, so I figure it's better to start sooner than later.
I suffer from occasional bouts of insomnia, which is occasionally self-induced. I'll go some gathering or party or whatever, and drink more coffee than I should, especially if I'm served a good Turkish espresso - you won't blink for a week after a cup of that sludge. So I figure if I can't sleep, I may as well be productive, and I end up cleaning the house - like taking all the pots and plates out of the kitchen drawers, washing and reorganizing them, etc. It no longer surprises my wife because it's happened so often. Out out damned spot!
Well folks, there you have it. My entire collection on three-and-a-half plates. In my defense though, I didn't start collecting ancients until February of this year, and I took the whole summer off. Anyway, I'm not a hoarder. I probably buy one out of every hundred coins I looks at.
I have extreme OCD as well ... but I find that "booze" makes me ease-up a bit on the ol' compulsions (ummm sure, a slew of obvious other problems flood-in behind the booze-solution ... but at least I can sleep and I don't have dish-pan hands!!) => *sigh* ... yah, my strategy is still a work-in-progress!!
Not so sure about the words "work" or "progress". Yeah, JA. It sounds like we're cut from the same cloth. I vacuum and dust the house at least twice per week. Same goes for the car and I wax her every week as well. On top of that I have painted my garage floor, so I vacuum it and mop it way too often. My tools are all in their place above a clean work bench. Sooo, you can imagine my coin babies and how well I look after them. The catalog is updated the moment I buy something new and I'm continuously tweeking the catalog. All in all, I'd say I'm kinda OCD.
Booze never worked for me that way - it would put me to sleep fast, but in a couple of hours, I'd be just as awake as if I had drank a pot of coffee.
I don't think it's OCD to take care of your stuff. You work hard for it, and it would be a sign of disrespect toward yourself NOT to take care of it. Now if I could only teach that lesson to my teens.
I have two grown sons. The oldest is a slob while the youngest is way too much like me in regards to fastidiousness; however, much, much too slow at getting things done. I'm not sure it's something you can teach.
