I did not buy Any coins in Feb. However, I did receive a selection of coins from the extremely generous @Clavdivs, including this really nice Licinius I, with a very interesting T-in-wreath in left field. Licinius I AE3, 18mm IMPLICINIVSPFAVG IOVICONSE VATORI RIC VII Rome 132Q
Tough one for me, as February was a rich month. Although I added, among others, the one from my avatar and a Divus Verus Consecration denarius I like a lot, the winner is the coin that made me participate in the auction. L. Censorinus 82 BC. Rome Denarius AR 17 mm., 3,73 g. Crawford 363/1d; Marcia 24; Sydenham 737 Obverse Type: Laureate head of Apollo right Reverse Legend: L·CENSOR VI Type: Marsyas walking left, nakedwith right arm raised and holding wine-skin over left shoulder; behind, column bearing statue of Victory.
Since I only bought a single ancient coin in February, my options for this thread are limited. Probus Potin Tetradrachm of Alexandria. Year 7=281/282 AD. Obverse: A K M AVΡ ΠΡOBOC CEB, laureate cuirassed bust right Reverse: L-Z, eagle standing left, head right with wreath in its beak. Dattari 5555, Emmett 3984.
Tough one, because I purchased some coins I really love. But this one is the coolest, because it features a scene from the gigantomachy on its reverse! Volusian, AD 251-253. Roman provincial Æ 29.1 mm, 11.2 g, 6 h. Cilicia, Seleucia ad Calycadnum, AD 251-253. Obv: ΑV Κ ΓΑ ΟVΙΒ ϹΑΒΙΝ ΓΑΛΛΟϹ, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust, right. My favorite Feb. coin. Vologases VI ( 208 - 226 A.D.) Billon Tetradrachm O: Bust left with long, tapered beard wearing tiara with hooks on crest, horn on side and long, curved earflap and earring. Lock of hair on forehead representing royal wart; B behind head. Diadem with loop at top and three ends. Wow, another great month... that Marsyas is awesome, as is the anguipede giant, the dolphin & rider, and the portrait of Vologases VI! Probably my favourite Feb. coin is this Arab-Sasanian pashiz of al-Hajjaj b. Yusuf, (694-713) showing a praying Muslim with huge hands on the reverse (popular & scarce type): ... but I suspect most of you would prefer this 2nd century provincial from Hierapolis in Phrygia! (Actually now that I think about it more, it's impossible for me to choose between these two.)
A February auction win. Bidding started at $120 but I won it with a bid of $360. Gallienus (253-268) AE Sestertius 28 mm 14.8 grams, squared flan, struck between 253 and 260. Obverse: Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, with the legend IMP C P LIC GALLIENVS P F AVG Reverse: Fides standing left, holding two standards, with the legend FIDES MILITVM, S C in field Reference: RIC 214, Cohen 240, Göbl 74s Also, here is my write-up of this coin and also the state of the orichalcum coinage in the mid to late 250's. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/gallienus-fides-militvm.376253/
@hotwheelsearl......Nice pick up, and yes a very interesting field mark! Did find this nice Jaga deva coin in Feb to add to my Kashmir obsession! Obverse...Ardochsho (Lakshmi) seated cross-legged facing in lalitasana (with right leg folded under and left leg hanging down), holding diadem in right hand and long-stemmed lotus in left hand, legend in Sharada script, to the left: 'Ja', to the right 'ga'.
