I'll start a thread on coin machines, old and new. Let me know when you've had enough. First up, they don't make em like this any more. Trade marked 1916, a few of these are still in use.
That's neat.. But what exactly were coin machines used for? Is that an actual cashier? Strange. I've read stories of coins still stuck inside of them.
This machine was invented by a bar tender who wanted a way to quickly make change for the customer. Push a button for the amount of change you want and levers would push the correct coins into the catch tray. You can see the modern version of these at a lot of drive thru windows.
Some banks use this sort of change maker too, similar to those things you might see in supermarkets. The difference is, though, that the machine is open to teller adding more loose coins that a customer would bring in. These are in clear sight to the customer some times, and it is how I was able to find my earliest presidential dollars.
