What website do you all use for online image hosting? Photobucket has too many bugs for me, Dropbox has also become more annoying, and Collective Coin is on its way out.
In this day and age I don't know why anybody would need an image hosting site. I mean you can buy 32GB memory sticks for as little as $8. Do you know how many pictures it takes to fill up 32GB ? Probably way more than most have ! But even if ya gotta buy 3 of them, it's still only $25. And they make them up to 64GB, and by now maybe even larger.
Most hosting sites serve several purposes - if you simply need to save your data somewhere, such a stick is fine of course. However, if you also want to show them to others, such an image hosting service makes sense. Sure, you can also upload images right here on CT for example, but what if you want to brag elsewhere too? I have - at this moment - about 10,500 of my images on my local hard drive. They would all fit on a 32GB stick. Not all are full resolution, of course, but chances are the same sort of proportions would happen with anyone archiving that many images. So far, I haven't found a need to archive any online for the purpose of posting images on forums. Every forum I participate on has had a provision for local upload. And since posting an image usually gives the forum a non-exclusive right to use it themselves elsewhere, I might as well leave it on their property. If I ever *did* feel the need to have them online, I'd put them on my own website. That's the only way I could be sure they were where I wanted, in the size I wanted.
Well, there may be such places out there where a memory stick wouldn't work, but if there is I'm not aware of one. edit - granted there was a time when it was common to "need" a hosting site if you wanted to share pics. I opened a Photobucket account myself for that very reason, back then. But to the best of my knowledge, those days are long gone.
There are efforts underway to save CollectiveCoin. It's the best coin image hosting site out there. Stay tuned. I hope they can save it
I'm pretty much done with photobucket. It is absolute garbage, and as the OP stated- way too many bugs. I've never considered doing straight uploads via the forum, so I'm going to try it now . . . . . Ummm. . . . . yeah. I like this. Problem solved.
This is my first time hearing about collectivecoin, its pending demise, and potential redemption. Can I get a quick summary on it please?
So I want to use one to store and share all of my coins for on a more permanent basis. I think I would eventually like to set up my own website (when I have enough time and coins to make it worthwhile). Image hosting for me is more about sharing the coins vs storing them for security purposes.
It was a wonderful file sharing coin specific website that allowed you to catalog and store images on its site. Due to high costs and traffic, it is shutting down in March. https://collectivecoin.com/browse
A little bit over a thousand considering that I have a 25 meg raw file plus a 4 Meg jpg. Efficient? No. And I realize a stand-alone program might create a slightly smaller jpg. The ease of having the camera do it wins.
32GB is small potatoes. They make external USB powered external drives that fit in your hand with larger capacities. I think there is a 1TB size. The USB power source does quickly deplete your laptop battery though so it wouldn't be the best for mobile use.
If I wanted to post images on a site of my own, I would just use Amazon S3. For general showing off, I don't see why just uploading to the forum is all that bad. Now, if I had 10k+ images like @SuperDave, I'd be investing in a redundant backup solution of some sort.
My suggestion isn't about a question of security, merely a matter of convenience. As for websites, a great many of them tend to just go away after a while - and you have no control over it. Even if you build your own you are still dependent upon your provider, and then there's the cost. But yeah, if you just want to create a place where anybody can go and see your coins, at any time - I can understand having a website for that purpose. Perhaps you should look at something like this - http://www.wobook.com/ Here's an example of what you can do with that - http://www.wobook.com/WB1N5fN8yR3B/Collection-1/The-Crown-Collection-World-Gold.html
