Most of the coins that I inherited are graded at MS 66. The coin book that I have is US Coin Digest and they do not offer values for coins of this grade. This book give values up to MS65 only. Is there another book that would give me values for coins for MS66? Some of them are graded MS65FH and MS64PL. I can not find any references to this grade. Thanks
Welcome to the forum I don't know of any book per se. There are multiple options depending upon how many coins you have. You can try the Red Book. or You can search auction sites for comparable sales or You can post pics here and we can assist. I like the last option that way I get to see some nice coins:bigeyes::bigeyes:
Hi Andy, and welcome! Even if you don't have photos, could you list a few of the labels, especially with the name or initials of the company grading it, like PCGS,NGC,ANACS, etc. as there is different equivalences between companies. One company's MS67 can be another's MS64. Jim
Hello, and welcome! Some good advice has already been given. As for the auction sites that FarmerB mentioned, that is the best way to get an idea of the value of your coins in any grades. The values you'll find there are generally closer to reality than actual price guides that you'll find. The best one is Heritage. The website is ha.com You have to join, but its easy and free. And then you can search the closed auction archives and find just about anything you want.
Most are PCGS. My late father in law was a big buyer of gold and he bought mostly that brand. I did get referred to a good auction site that I can see what coins like has has have sold for. Thanks for the advice.
Have checked that site and it looks good in helping me evaluate the coins that I have inherited. It may take some time to find all of them and the grading seems confusing due to the company that they were bought from but at least it is a good start. Thanks, Andy
1) PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) is considered to be the top grading service; they have an online price guide (and I stress guide) at their site www.pcgs.com 2)FH means Full Head and is a designation applied to Standing Liberty Quarters, PL means Proof Like and is a designation applied to Morgan Dollars (both of these indicate an increased value over the same coin without the designation). 3) You can/should also check the price guide at: http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/fmv.shtml 4) There is also a coin forum on the PCGS site where there are a lot of helpful people (I post there under the same ID as here).
My late father in law seems to have bought all his coins PCGA. Most are gold collectors types and a lot of bullion and a lot of old silver. I will check out the site to help me get a good idea of the values. Thanks for your expert advice. I am not a collector, just an inheritor, so I need all the help I can get.
"PCGA" is not a known, respected grading company. Unfortunately, it might merely be a seller who has graded and encapsulated his own coins. In such cases, the grading is almost always extremely liberal/much higher than what others would grade the coins at. On a practical basis, those grades are probably meaningless and the coins not worth anywhere near the prices that correspond with those grades. If you could post a few good images, we might be able to provide a bit of ballpark feedback regarding the quality of the coins.
In an earlier post he said PCGS. And since A and S are right next to each other on the keyboard, I'm assuming that was a typo when he said PCGA.
Good. If you care to list the coins, I/we can probably give you pretty good estimates as to their real, current values.
Give me an email address and I will send you the LX sheet that I put them on. There may be an error of two in listing them and I may have overlooked some detail or other, as this is nothing that I know about.
