Hi everyone, I want you to take a look at this nickel that belongs to my sister..she found it in her pocket change........she had me to look at it for her to see if it was worth anything........I looked at it and also took it to a dealer/friend of mine and we agreed that the best thing to do was to send it PCGS to have it ceritfied...........the thing was shipped to them and I checked their site and it has been graded........and encapsulated.....MS62........but that is all........now I am a little confused........if this is a normal nickel.......and would not get a designation as an error of SOME kind........why would it look like this???? I will let you judge........here is a link........Ohhh and BTW.......the reverse is very well struck.......I even thought it would go "full steps".... CoinFUSED Nickel
This is a "capped die strike". The obverse die face was covered by a thin layer of metal derived from a coin that stuck to the die face and was struck against a succession of planchets. It's worth anywhere from $10 - $20. Not worth slabbing, unfortunately. -- Mike Diamond. xxx Edited for self promotion xxx CONECA no. 2969
I'm not sure. A capped die strike is a well-known error with a simple etiology that should have been accurately described.
Agreed, you have to ask and pay extra to submit it under the mint error service tier. Otherwise it just gets graded and slabbed as a regular coin. Even if it is a blatent error.
No not really, they just don't want to have to deal with them. So if they have to they are going to either get paid for it or you get it back treated no differently than a regular coin.
I can understand requesting attribution for something like an RPM, but for something as obvious as the coin in the original post?
Hi everyone, I just received the news today from the coin dealer friend of mine that the nickel arrived in the mail today.........he also stated that the coin was labeled as a mint error 100%strike thru.........this information was not on the website when I checked.....so, I guess I jumped the gun a little...and I wish to apologize to PCGS....I have had some negative thoughts on this , the last few days.........I am pleased at the outcome for my sisters sake as she really did not have any interest to sell the coin......it was just the fact that she had "found" a mint error and it was going to be official.........this is one of the benefits of certification that no one mentions........"personal satisfaction"..........Thanks for all of your replies and info.......I will post a pic as soon as I get the actual coin back into my possesion.... Have a great day!!
Ok gang, As promised here is a pic ........I picked up coin yesterday and photographed it today.........
