My grandmother just recently gave me a coin. I have done some research online and have found it to be a 1944 bronze Australian penny. But, on the back of the coin it does not have a kangaroo like the others I have seen online, but rather it has a man on a throne with a shield with a cross on it and he is holding some type of trident spear. On the opposite side it does have the profile of a man. All of the writing is the same as the Australian pennies I have seen online. It just has a different opposite side. Does anyone have any ideas on this and the possible worth? Blessings Jason
Welcome to Cointalk, Jason. Your coin may be a British coin. It would help if you could post a photo.
Sounds like Gram gave you a 1944 George VI penny from England, it is similar in size and composition to the Australian penny, but has Britannia on the reverse instead of the kangaroo. Is there a story attached to the coin and why she had it? If so, that makes the coin worth more to you than even a collectable value, purely as a sentimental piece. My most treasured coin is a 1867 2¢ piece from the USA that my Grandfather gave me years ago. He had the coin for almost 80 years when he gave it to me.
Hi Gram welcome to CoinTalk, and I have to agree it sounds like a British coin rather than a Australian one, if you could post a pic or scan that would be very helpful.
Welcome Jason, as stated by Scottishmoney and DeOrc it sounds like a British coin. Be sure to ask her questions about it. Good Luck and stop back any time...
