hello everybody, At the request of my son, I appealed to your "knowledge". I would like more information on the following Syria coin: It comes from Egypt or Syria I "think" the value of 1 pound ? but: what year it's written ? history of this coin ? what it represents ? what's written on this coin are there a lot of this sort in circulation? and my son asks me what is the 3 stars on the shield of the eagle? and why an Eagle? I don't know Thank you in advance for all that can teach me a little bit more about this coin
Actually, this isn't from Egypt, it's from Syria. The denomination is 1 pound. I can't read Eastern Arabic script, but I can read the numerals, which are on the bottom on the reverse (back) of your coin. The dates are 1968 and 1387. 1968 is the Christian/Gregorian date (the dates we use in the U.S.), and 1387 is the Muslim/Hejira date (the dates used in Islamic countries). The reason that the dates are different is because the Gregorian calendar is based on Jesus Christ, and the Hejira calendar is based on the date that Muhammad fled Mecca. Sorry I couldn't be of more help with the symbolism, but that's all I know.
It is actually Syria, 1 Pound 1974, nickle composition, no mintage listed in krauss. Oops, 1968 is right, 10 million mintage, Bigh beat me too it.
ohh interesting, I did not know that the coin came from Syria, not Egypt. for I have received in Egypt by one person. The eagle in front looked strangely like an Egyptian coin Thank you for the beginning of explanation you bring me here. To the eagle and the 3 stars nobody has an idea or knows the meaning of the coin?
All I could find out about the reverse is that it's actually a Syrian Hawk, also known as the Hawk of Quraish.
thank you so much for your informations and for your help, now I know more about this coin and from wich country it comes from...
Syria KM#98 Nickel Mintage; 10,000,000 Obverse; "Arab Republic of Syria" "1 Lira (Pound)" 1968-1387AH Reverse; "Arab Republic of Syria" and The Hawk of Quraish with three stars. The Quraishi hawk, used today in the coats of arms of Yemen, Syria and the UAE, was also used by the Quraish tribe, the strongest in Arabia. political union (1958-61) of Egypt and Syria. The capital was Cairo. The two countries were merged (1958) into a single unit comprising the Southern (Egypt) and the Northern (Syria) Regions, with Gamal Abdal Nasser as president. As an initial step toward creating a pan-Arab union, the republic abolished Syrian and Egyptian citizenship, termed its inhabitants Arabs, and called the country "Arab territory." It considered the Arab homeland to be the entire area between the Persian Gulf and the Atlantic coast. With Yemen (North Yemen), it formed (1958) a loose federation called the United Arab States. Hence the three stars.
