Hey all, this 1939 DDR Jeff is in an rather old slab and I wonder what you think it would grade if resubmitted to NGC/PCGS. Let me know what you think, THANKS!
Nice coin :thumb: XF-45-AU-50 in pictures, although it appears to be one of those coins that is nicer in hand.
I also think that the coin would be better in hand than the photos but from the photos I would grade it AU50. There seems to be some luster on the face!! Speedy
There looks to be a vertical scratch down Jefferson's ear , so I don't think sending it for grading would be wise. I think this is a case of ' save your money ' .
Coin looks MS to me, I'm gonna guess they gave it a 63. No, I would not submit for regrading. If your desire is to sell the coin, list it as is. Those who know will recognize the age of the slab all on their own and may use that as a reason to bid the coin up. So why spend the money ?
I don't think I'd resubmit it. People pay more than coins are worth if they are in old slabs, thinking they will go up 3 or so points on the grade, when realistically IMO they rarely do. (I've submitted about 40 or so coins in old slabs that I got from my dad).
The coin is in an ANACS "classic" slab which was while they were first using the hard slabs in the fall/winter of 1989 before the ANA sold to Amos Press. It is graded MS 60, but I think it has a chance at 63 if it were resubmitted. I picked it up for a song a while back (I paid less than VF money for it) and just found it again while I was sorting a box of stuff, I wish I were more organized, lol. BTW, what appears to be wear on Jefferson's hair and on Monticello is just a weak strike, the luster is unbroken across the design. Thanks for your opinions guys!
Yup, that picture definetly looks nicer that the first. It's interesting how much of a difference in quality between the reverse and the obverse there is.
I thinks that's a good grade for the coin , think you should leave it as is. Is there a scratch down Jeffersons ear or is it just in the photo ? It doesn't look that bad but they usually affect the outcome of the grade. Thanks . Nice coin.
Yeah, that is a scratch above/on the ear. I still haven't decided what to do. I don't plan on dying for another 50 years or so, so I think I'll just sit on it for now.
