Hey everyone, I Just got into the hobby recently as some already on here know. I got a few of those coin folders as gifts, some washington quarters, some lincoln cents, jefferson nickels, state quarters, and so on.... How many of you use coin folders to collect? Also, for those that do use folders, are you just putting in any old coin you find in circulation, or are you buying individual coins that are BU to put in your folders. Right now ive just been putting in any coins I find in circulation, its been pretty fun, but then I started thinking about putting some nice specimens in there...... not sure if theyd stand the test of time being in those folders though. any insight is appreciated!! Jim
Hey man, I use the coin folders, the special lock in kind, so the coins don't fall out. Except I only use circulated coins. Reason being, you have to push the coins into the folders, and doing so you have to touch the surface of the coin. Which is a big no no when it comes to Unc coins, cause that can leave fingerprints, scratches, a lot of unwanted things that you don't want on your coins. But, if you want an album for your higher end coins, I would invest in a Dansco, a good album, just type into google and you will get a lot of results for them. Well, hope my advice helps man. Happy collecting! :thumb: Phoenix
I got started using coin folders, and still use them today for my circulated coin collections (I use Danscos). Virtually all of these coins were collected out of pocket change and rolls. IMO, there's nothing wrong with coin folders/albums at all. I wouldn't put expensive coins in them for fear of them being damaged, but then again, what's expensive for me may not be for you and visa versa...Mike
I still have my Whitman folders for my Lincoln cents, that my grandmother got me about 20 years ago... it's what got me started in coin collecting in the first place. All coins in there are drawn from circulation (more recent ones may just barely be circulated or even be mint state, but they're not worth much more than face value anyway). Keeping them mainly for sentimental value than anything else, though I do keep up with new cents. Have almost a complete set since about 1933 or so. Do use Dansco for my Kennedy halves, presidential dollars, and my type set.
i also use the blue whitman folders. one tip i have is if you get a folder where the whole seems too small for the coin get a new coin of the same denomination and a hammer. hammer the new coin into the hole then take it out. the old coin should now go right in. after several sore thumbs this is the best way of doing it. :hammer:
I keep my mercs in a Dansco album. I like pulling it out and looking at them this way instead of 2x2's. As far as fingerprinting the coins I always use cotton gloves.
Cool, I appreciate those replies guys. I might get a Dansco state quarter folder and put in some nice uncirculated coins in there. Thanks for turning me onto dansco, they look like nice folders. Jim
I always used the Whitman folders when I started collecting. I now use Whitman Classic albums for all of my coins. The Whitman Classic is similar to the Dansco albums as you can see both sides of the coin. The only thing different is the color...Danscos are brown and Whitman are blue. Some may argue that Dansco albums are constructed better....they very well may be, but I like the look of the coins against the blue pages...just my thoughts.
I started out with Littleton folders and have started to graduate to Littleton albums to put my circulated stuff into... I really like the hefty-ness of their construction. I am putting in AU and proofs when I get them, but I am using cotton gloves as well....
