Hi All- I am new to this forum (just created an account now), but looking forward to reading about many exciting coins. I was with my father-in-law this morning and we were going through his coin collection sorting through his dimes and we came across this one. He thought it might be an error coin or die error. Can you all take a look at it and let me know what you think? It would be much appreciated. Thanks, Ben
First, welcome to the neighborhood! Is it raised or recessed? It's hard to tell from the photos. Chris
Hi Chris, Thanks for the welcome. I believe it is recessed, but I will look when I get home from work to make sure and report back.
Maybe an indent? I am not sure. http://error-ref.com/extrusion-strikes--with-indents-and-partial-brocka.html
It is an error, it is a strike through and it appears to either be struck through an off-center dime, or possibly a piece of clad layer that has fallen off a previously struck dime.
I see what appear to be incuse (sunken), normally-oriented design elements, principally the top of Roosevelt's head. If this is the case, then this coin was struck through a thin, previously-struck layer of metal. It could have been struck through a clad layer that was struck off-center on top of another dime. Or it could have been struck through a clad layer that detached from an off-center dime. In either case, it's a neat find and one that is quite rare.
