Hi. I am new here but would like to ask a question. I purchased a couple of the FSNC coins encapsulated by SEGS. I really like them and the holder for protection. Now I have picked up some similar Jefferson nickels from Coin Craft. They are silver and dated 1938 althou a modern strike. I would like to have these coins attributed similarly but I am not sure what the corect name is. Thanks for any help and now I will try to post a pic. Joe

Those are not original 1938 nickels. They were made by somebody other than the U.S. Mint. Nickels were only made of any silver content from 1942-45 and were only 56% silver. Your coins are not genuine currency. SEGS is not a very accurate TPG. If you sent the coins into NGC or PCGS they would not crossover at the same grade level and would come back lower and probably lose the Full Step designation. Always examine the coins in the holder and see if the coin matches the grade. This is why most TPG holders do not trade at anywhere near market price. PCGS and NGC will trade close to it, ICG will trade at about 80% and everyone else falls off rapidly.

Thanks. I was only looking to holder it for protection. I got a responce on another forum from someone wanting to do the same. This is what SEGS sent back.

I would call it a Token...SEGS is not the best in my book but some just love them because they know alot about variatys (sp?) and such.

I don't think that PCGS or NGC or ANACS would grade this Token....they would send it back in a "Body Bag".

There are many types of holders on the market that you can buy for under $1 that will protect your coins just as well. Just do a search here on CT for storage or coin holder - you'll get lots of choices ;)

Yes alot of holders will offer protection. I just liked the way SEGS did the FSNC Jefferson and thought having this one slabbed in a similar fashion would be aesthetically nice.

I have a couple of these fantasy coins. They are nice, made of sterling silver, and were struck in London, I belive. I have been to Coin Craft on London, and they have the plasters for this "coin" hanging uo in their shop.

They would never previously ship these "coins" to the US for fear fo leagl issues, but I think that is not a problem as they are not an official design.

Also the fact they have a medal turn as opposed to coin turn should help show no attempt at deceit on their part. I picked up 3 from them about a month ago.

Are they shipping ot the US now, or did you get them in the US from someone else? What did they cost each? (Last I heard, CC was selling them at 35 or 40 pounds). I wonder if they minted more to go with this SEGS thing.

Yes they did ship to the U.S. I live in New Jersey. Also the price I believe was 34 pounds. I was surprised, I just put it on my credit card and they converted currency for me. I thought that my be a problem. Here is another thread I started on this medal. PCGS thread

Neither PCGS nor NGC will slab those fantasies, so I would just send them to SEGS.

Then again didn't one of the big comapnies slab the concept dollars that were made wen the Sackys were being proposed?

Seems that they bend their own rules to suit their whim.

Hobo coins are genuine coins which have been individually re-sculpted into entirely new designs by artists such as our own member billzach, a real master at the art.
