I am so sorry to hear your story. It seems that the perps are often those closest to us. That's why one of the first rules of keeping valuables (coins, gun, gems, cash, etc.) at home is to not let anyone know that you do. There's an old saying that goes something like "Only two people can keep a secret, me and myself".

So, don't let others know you collect coins. If you have a safe, disguise it so that casual visitors cannot see it and thus spread the story that "so and so has a safe". That's why gun safes are so bad for coins - they are too big, can't be hidden, and are generally easy to break into.

Had a friend who had a nice collection of working hunting rifles kept in a gun safe in the living room - not hidden. He took his two teenage daughters hunting and to the range and one of them could not keep her mouth shut. One evening, some of her "friends" performed a home invasion when the family was at home and held them all at gunpoint while my friend opened the safe and gave it all up. My friend is an ex-marine and nobody's huckleberry but he would not risk his own life much less his family's for a few bucks. Fortunately no one was injured and the perps were eventually caught but it could have gone in another direction entirely.

    So, don't tell anybody anything!

My condolences on your loss and I hope you retrieve your property and the perp gets his just desserts.

Be sure to let local coin people know in case they get some of the coins offered to them and put it in the news who it was (police report) and to let you know if they
have any info on any unrecovered coins. He will have a sad story why he would do it, maybe with tears. Best wishes for all to return. Jim

Sorry that happened to you and to your boys. Since you caught them on film I’m sure the police will catch up to him. At least you and your family are safe and unharmed. Coins can be replaced but humans can’t.

woah, sorry to hear this. Hope all goes well in your returning of property. Best the *&%$ is punished.
Losing property is one thing but having your home violated hurts almost as much.
I would not be lenient on this guy. he deserves harsh punishment.
I would however pray that I could forgive on the other hand. Don't let him rob you of that too.
Be completely done with him. For good.

Quite possiblely many of us have had friends ( and relatives (the worse event))do things you would never expect. I have also, and the combination of anger and dejection from the event stays for quite a while. Jim

In the end, this perp will have a bunch of justifications (excuses) for his betrayal of trust and friendship. When all the BS is boiled away, it will come down to drugs, gambling, over-spending, alcohol, sex, car payment, or his kid's tuition to an expensive and exclusive private school. Basically, he will be the same as all the other low-lifes who believe everyone else should not only care about their problems but also subsidize them.

I had a very young nephew many years ago that had fallen on hard times so I allowed him to stay in my guest bedroom. Came home from work one evening and he was gone. And oddly, there was a Morgan dollar laying on my bedroom floor so I knew something was up. He had taken a box of coins from my bedroom closet. I confronted him at my sister in laws house the next day and he returned the coins to me embarrassed with himself and crying. That was twenty years ago and I have forgiven him, though he will never again be left alone in my home. And that is a deep kind of hurt when it comes from friends and family. I am sorry you are going through this.

Wow that is terrible! I would be fuming, especially with it being a “good friend”.
Don’t take matters into your own hands. Your boys will be even more upset if their father is behind bars. Let legal justice take its toll on the a-hole.

A similar thing happened to me about 14 years ago. Went on vacation with my family and we came home and realized we were robbed. It took an hour or so to realize it because our house wasn’t broke into and nothing was left a mess. The thief knew we were gone for an extended time and they knew where our spare key was hidden. My coin collection was one of the missing items. Luckily it was all very low value stuff. Less than $100 in all. But the feeling that someone else was walking through our home taking our property was awful.

I always suspected it was a friend of mine because he knew we were gone for that week and knew where we kept our hidden key. Low and behold the key was gone when we went to check.

At least you know who did it and have evidence of that. Let the cops do their jobs. Sorry this happened.
