Any recommendations or good personal experience with coin collecting software. Preferable one that will automatically update prices from a reputable source. I see many products out there but don't want to committ without a recommendation from one of you coin gurus.
Of all the software products available - I find this one the best - it is the one I use. Coin Elite None of them update values automatically - but Coin Elite does offer an update twice a year. However - and this is true of every coin program I have ever seen - none of these values are very accurate. If you want real accurate data regarding values - you need to track it yourself.
LOL i never knew there was a coin collecting software.... ive just been using microsoft excel to keep track of all my coins along with the calculator to keep the total i paid for them and using various price guides to give a ballpark estimate of how much there worth for insurance sake... i might have to pick this proggy up
CoinWorld offers a product called Coin Collectors Assistant. This is an easy to use program. I have not personally used any coin program. (make my own using excel). I have also heard many good things about Coin Elite. You should do a little looking around to see which matches your particular needs.
I have a free coin collecting program that I can e-mail to any one that wants to try it. Its to big to put on here.
From: High Plains Writer (mike1949marotta@aol.com) Subject: Re: Coin Software Newsgroups: rec.collecting.coins Date: 2003-04-23 21:35:20 PST I have written two articles this year (and two others a while back) about coin collecting software. I gathered as many as I could and ran them as many ways as I could. In both articles, I recommend the same path to others. Get the demos on CD. (Do not download demos. I got a virus that way -- and yes, we have firewalls, etc., etc.) Get the CDs. Try the programs. What counts is not the software, but your collection. No two people collect the same material the same way. Do you want to include your scan of your coin in the inventory? How many scans would you like to include? Do you care about the latest Coin World "Trends" prices or other guides? Some packages let you change the names of fields. Some let you change the name of EVERY field. Some take a lot of memory and/or disk. Some assume that you collect 19th and 20th century US Type by Date and Mintmark -- and nothing else. You might actually need MORE THAN ONE software for a broad collection. In both articles (The Celator and The GNA Journal) -- and in this newsgroup in posts like this -- I warn that the worst thing you can do is take someone else's recommendation. Psychologist Leon Festinger developed a theory known as "Cognitive Dissonance" to explain how we justify choices that cannot be changed easily. "I bought it and it works pretty good for me." is an error signal, not a recommendation.
These are just for COINS. Some of these companies (Liberty Street is one; there are others) have software for Paper Money... and stamps... and... and... That is my first recommendation. Most collectors do not know what they collect or how. They just think they do. Creating a computerized database is as different from keeping coins in boxes, as pulling your kid in a wagon is from trekking across Mongolia. (Do you ever run out of food in the back yard? See. It is not just a bigger problem, but a diiferent problem, entirely.) Cataloguing your collections with Excel is a good way to get the experience you need to make an intelligence choice... or choices. My second recommendation is that no one package might be "best" for you: you might need two or more. My numismatica runs into multiple lots of Tokens, Ancients, and Paper. In addition, I have some U.S. coins and some World coins. Most collectors are like that. In shorthand chats we say, "I collect Fargo Farthings." but what we mean is that this is the 58th series I have pursued, starting with "Matchbook Covers of the Mayan Kings." Michael "Impulsive consumerism is both the boon and the bane of collecting."
hey, all of the coin software (full version) need somekind of payment. Who has link to free one, not download/trail/demo version..=) jimmiejam, your is full version of the software?
