I have been helping the 11 year old son of one of my bank tellers get started coin collecting, I got him a state quarter book a helped him along filling it up. His mom asked me if I knew of any good coin collecting books for kids starting out. Thought I would run it by here to see if y'all have any suggestions, Thank you in advance!

Thanks, I thought about that, but am worried that it may be beyond his basic needs or even a little over his head right now. Will pass on the suggestion to his Mom though.
-It's probably one of the finest resources the young fellow could have at this stage of his collecting career. Thinking back to when I was young, it was the only volume my father possessed and I poured through it endlessly. An excellent starting point, indeed.
There is a lot of stuff in that book beyond my basic needs NOW, let alone when I was a kid. I don't collect gold, for example. But the knowledge he will gain by reading through it NOW will be very beneficial both now and later on.
Me too. But I thought that all the Merit Badge info was in the Scout Manual. I don't think they had a book specifically for any badge. That was in the 1950's though.
I got my first Red Book when I was 10. I loved it, and still have it. Highly recommend every collector or potential collector have a copy, kids or adults. Depending on the kid's reading level, you might consider a book that explains coin collecting. At the same time I got the Red Book, I also got Coin Collecting for Dummies. I consider that a great starter book to help explain how to collect coins. The other recommendation that I might suggest can be found in my signature, or maybe someone else could recommend it. (Again, depends on his reading level - if he's advanced, he can handle it just fine). He needs a book that helps explain how to look at coins, and what to look for. It isn't specifically written for kids, but its the book I wish I'd had when I started collecting (again, I was in the 10-12 year range when I really got into it).
I didn't have a book early on. But, the only book store in town got used to me "browsing" in the vicinity of the Red Books.
Thank you all for the great suggestions. On second thought maybe a Red Book for him IS a good idea,along with some of the others mentioned. It is a wealth of information and the pictures and information help. Not to mention it covers just about any coin he is likely to run into,
Maybe it’s changed since then? There’s still is a lot in information in the scout book, but there is a also small book for each merit badge with specific info. It also includes all of the requirements to earn the merit badge.
My first Redbook is dated 1970 so I was eleven. I read that book cover to cover constantly as a youngster.
