Does anyone know if there are any clubs, and if they are reputable, for monthly coinage? Not sure how interested I really am something like that, however my son my kick of it... Thank you!
Not exactly sure of what you mean by coin clubs. In some areas of the country where honesty is still around, there are local coin clubs with information on how to join on the internet by just typing in coin clugs for your state. Your town or city may also have some local clubs. Where I live in a large city and the crime rate is intensive, there are very few coin clubs. Also, around here very few individuals will sign up for a coin, currency, gun, knife, etc type magazine or booklet. In our mailbox would not be a great place to advertise what is in the house. As you may have noticed on the internet there are many web sites that simulate a coin club and less exposure as to where you live. I've noticed that on the PCGS web site many people get together at coin shows that talk to each other via the PCGS web site. One of the YNs, young Numismatist, got together with another YN there and formed a coin buisness. Both are barely in High school and now in the coin buisness. They wanted to try to also start a YN web site to get rid of some of us very elderly, almost useless by now, individuals.
c-o-m club Littleton coins has a coin of the month club. I am sure it is overpriced, but they have a silver dollar club were they send you one coin a month on a "coin on approval" program. They send you a coin and if you like it you pay for it, if not send it back. I think the first coin is an 02 or 03 silver eagle for like $23, but I have no idea how much other coins would be.
Please, please read the thread about Littleton on the same page as this one. You would be better off just sending your money to me. You would get nothing in return and I would use it wisely at the nearest bar. That would still be better than dealing with an organization that has so many complaints against them.
hubris - If I understand your question correctly, you are asking about programs where they send you coins to purchase every month. Quite a few dealers have programs like this set up. Once you sign up for the program, depending on the series & grade criteria you select, they will send you coins every month. It makes for an easy way to complete sets. The downside of these programs, at least in my opinion, is that you never know what you are going to get and once you get it - you may not want it. For example, you may receive an MS65 Morgan, but it might be the ugliest Morgan you ever saw. Some of these dealers use these programs to get rid of the coins they otherwise have a hard time selling. Most dealers have return policies though so you can return the coins. But to me, it's not really a good idea. I prefer to pick and choose the coins for my collection.
Alrighty then. No clubs and no booze for Carl either. I am still looking for a way to jump start a collection I have the bug and it has bitten me hard.
Please start your collection with studying!! You will save yourself money and heartache by investing in books first and then in the coins!! Trust me, the education that you get from reading about coins will only enhance your enjoyment of the coins once you begin to purchase them!
I agree that you should first start with a good book(s) on coins so you know what your doing. Too many people get burned by lack of information as to what something is. Not sure where you live but if within a reasonably modern society in your area there must be coin shows somewhere. I suggest you try the internet for a list of coin shows somewhere within your area. Visit one or more as if you were looking for a good deal on a car at a auto dealership. Ask tons of questions. Look for a few books on coins and try the Red Book. As for Booze I didn't say not to indulge in that, only coin clubs unless you know what your doing. By the way buying a coin will last whereas the booze I consume is gone as soon as I go to ________. When I was a kid I joined a stamp club via the mail. They went me packages of stamps and as a kid I thought it was great. As I got older and bought a few books on stamps I learned that they were sending me piles of garbage stamps not worth the postage to get them.
