For most people college is the time of life when they have the least financial flexability and any extra money normally goes towards "social activities". It might be a hard thing to find enough interest is a single age group to put together a club. Now if there isn't any type of club in your area creating one that is open to all ages is more likely to be successful.

A few years ago I attended one club meeting which was about a two hour drive, there were probably 40-50 people in attendance. With the exception of 3-4 small kids (brought by their parents) I was one of two youngest in attendance at the age of 33, not exactly a booming college presence.

    Clubs vary in extrordinary ways.

Some are collector centric and love to educate new collectors.

Unfortunately, most have devolved into a sellers get together where shop talk is the rule. New collecters who happen to find the meeting are pigeons to be swallowed up and chewed out. Your coins are mocked and scofffed at because you might want to sell them and they want to give you a dime on the dollar for them. And that, only if they are actually easily moved.

Don't let the latter do that to you. Just move on to finding another club.

You already have found a great web site for the collectors of all stages, novice to expert. It's certainly a better situation than when I was in College.

The Boston Numismatic Society is the oldest club in the country. In order to become a member you need to be refered by someone but that shouldn't be a problem if you want to join as I am the Vice-President. Each meeting starts with a brief business meeting followed by a members' show and tell where members bring in coins or other related items to show off. After a short break, usually with refreshments there is a guest speaker who will speak on a coin or currency related topic. Offering items for sale is not currently allowed at the club.

Here is the info on the club.

Boston Numismatic Society, Trinity Church, 730 Main Street, Waltham, MA. Meetings second Tuesday, Sept. - June 7:30 P.M.. For information call 617 244-1972 (Colony Coin) or e-mail to bosnumsoc@yahoo.com
