Can someone please explain the criteria for choosing the Coin Chat option over one of the specific subject forums? I assume that the Chat room is open to any of the categories eg., U.S., World, Paper etc.; but what determines if a post should start on Chat or in one the topical forums? Thanks.

    JCro57 Making Errors Great Again

Coin Chat is where most members go to and where, in my opinion, the most interesting threads and posted photos are. Personally, I learn more here in "Chat." The "Error" section is also good, as well as browsing the "want" list and "for sale" section.

There is always going to be some overlapping (people posting error stuff in the chat forum, etc.). But if you stay here on the chat room you'll be educated and entertained.

Don't go 'topical'. I hate 'topical'..........coin chat allows for a vast range of things, and the best part is, you don't have to overthink things. Simple is genius. :)

If it obviously goes elsewhere put it there. If it doesn't, put it here if it is coin related. Otherwise put it in General Discussion. Simple.

A problem arises only when someone wants to introduce themselves by talking about an error when they created a model train made out of ancient coins found by roll hunting.

Got it. For U.S. coins if it leans toward technical analysis start a new thread in U.S. Coin Forum. But in general it sounds like you mean the CT site is more of a club and less of a college.

Lol. Although I am amazed by how many related a subjects there are to coins in general.

Sorry if mislead you. This is one of the best places on the 'net' to learn. It may seem like 'club' sometimes, but that's because so many members know each other.

Speaking as the guy who actually decides what the answer to that is - you do ! Nobody else.

edit - There is however an exception. If someone post something there that is not related to numismatics then it may be moved to the appropriate section - General Discussion.

Purely for a point of clarification for those who are not clear or not aware - the General Discussion section is ONLY for posting about things that have absolutely nothing to do with coins.

If it has to do with coins it should NOT be posted there.

That said, if someone does post something there that does have to do with coins, I may move it to where I think it belongs and I may not. And I base my decisions on the individual post.

Yes, thank you. And I suppose your task of keeping things organized has plenty of gray areas, for example when a thread morphs from one subject to another.
And not to flog a tired horse here, but I am operating under the assumption that the U.S. Coins Forum is mostly intended for those subjects with technical aspects, while Chat is for more general coin-related banter.

You're welcome. And no, that's not true at all. You see, I learned many years ago that it is the nature of open discussion to stray off course and take an entirely different direction, but yet still be related in some way or another to the original subject. So no, threads are not moved for that reason.

That said, if things to go too far astray I, or another moderator, may post telling folks to get things back on topic. But that's about as far as we go.

No not at all. We not only allow a great deal of latitude, we even encourage it for without it you cannot have free and open discussion. For the most part it is you guys, the members, who decide what to post where. About the only time we move things around is when it is for your own benefit.

That said, there are some things we do not allow here and it's spelled out quite plainly in the rules. All one has to do is read them.
