I received a copy of the Krause "Standard Catalog of German Coins - 2nd edition" the other day. I am now trying to use it to attribute this coin and am failing miserably. I can find similar coins but with either the name Ferdinand or Rudolph but nothing with the name Maximillian. I am looking in the section for Lübeck. Do any of you have the book? Can you find this coin cataloged in the book?
This catalogue only lists German & German States coins from the 17th Century (1601 onwards). You won't find this Lubeck coin there.Besides, there is still room for improvement on Krause's part, as they tend to leave a lot of information out of the catalogues, especially in the 17th & 18th Centuries. Aidan.
I would suspect that the problem may be that yor book does not go back far enough. Looks like that coin is dated 1573 - most of the Krause books only go back to 1600. I think it's a thaler of 32 shillings issued under Maximillian of course. Nice coin
Doug,it is a 32 Schilling coin.A Shilling is an English (or British & British Commonwealth) coin. The 32 is in the eagle on the obverse side. Aidan.
You guys are ever so right. Yes, my book only goes back to 1600. Silly me... I should have been able to figure that out. Well, I borrowed the picture off the net. I'd love to have the coin. Thanks.
I had to do a double take on Aidan's post. I finally realized (I think) that his point was a matter of spelling. He was pointing out that "Shilling" (notice there is no C) is English but that this coin is a "Schilling" (with a C).
