There is a very famous picture by Norman Rockwell that is about coin collecting. I bet a lot of collectors have a print of that hanging in thier home. I am also curious to know what other art people might display?
I have two pieces that would probably qualify as coin art. I don't hang them but use them as paperweights. They're 3-inch coin replicas from Jake's (http://www.jakesmp.net), one of a Saint, the other of a Buffalo nickel. Under $2 each. Made of zinc and coated with "goldene" for Saint and I don't know what for the Buffalo nickel. Surprisingly well done, the design, for the price. Novelty, but fun.
Bigger Than Life and Twice as Real When I worked at COIN WORLD, we often got to keep the blow-ups of rare coins for publication. I kept a rare high Mint State Seated Quarter from some Long Beach auction. The picture is put away because of the way we are jammed into our adobe hacienda. Other coin art images include mounted and framed banknotes. I have physicists in a frame. Also, in our previous home, in my inner office, I had little frame with an Austrian 20 Schilling because it had the economist Carl Menger on it.
I placed mine on ebay, however, it didn't sell. It was an enlarged mint engraving on metal for the 1886 five dollar note. The only US note to picture coins on it. An 1886 Morgan dollar. The frame and matting cost over $40.00 20X24 inch frame. Have pictures but no host, if interested will send in email.
I am a photographer, painter, and scupltor. I have plenty of ideas for the blank walls but rarely take the time to do anything about it. My next project in 3-D is to carve a quarter design I came up with for the aftermath of the statehood program. I think it would look good in coin relief, so I'll be carving it into plaster. Other ideas I have had are to make giant white plaster galvano size replicas of some of the other coin series by hand. I have also worked on drawings of coins in the past, and have done a few paintings and drawings of other subjects over time...
I have some chocolate coin molds from Germany with extremely fine detail.1909 cent, St Gaudins anda Morgan
Here is the pics I hope of the Mint Engraving and bill reverse of 1886 $5.00 note with Morgan dollars. http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/j99rider/lst?.dir=/Coins&.view=t
I am currently working on a piece of art made of pennies glued to canvas of a rose when done ill post pics
Looking forward to see some beauty. There is "fractal art" in the coin (I'll write a post "Coin & Art" on this later, in "Coin with/out numerals thread".)
I was going to hang this and add coin and token images around it. I ended up giving it to a friend that is really into the topic.
The walls of my Den/Man Cave are filled with big replica coins from Thermo Art Plastics. One of my favorites is the 1911 $2.50 shown below, but my wall is graced with both obverse and reverse of Lincoln Cent, Indian Cent, Mercury Dime, Buffalo Nickel, and obverses only of Washington Quarter, Franklin Half, Indian $10, and St Gaudens $20. I own but don't have room to display both obverse and reverse of the Kennedy Half, and reverses of the Franklin Half and St Gaudens $20. I'm still looking for the reverse of the Washington Quarter, Indian $10, and Peace Dollar, plus both obverse and reverse of the Indian $5 and Ike Dollar.
