some of my coworkers know I’m into coins. Every now and then I get a little surprise, they’ll bring me in something to buy. $1 in cents to search and a silver quarter! Happy Friday friends!
I have heard before that we should be hush hush about our hobby to keep potential thief's out of our business. I am more like you though. My favorite banker lady always sets aside odd change for me. And one of my best purchases was from a co-workers desk. She was taking a half eagle and a gold dollar she inherited to the "buy your gold" place for $200.00. I asked her if she would rather have $400.00 and we both walked away happy!
I get that you need to be careful of how you conduct yourself but you also cannot live like a hermit just because you like to collect coins. You don’t need to invite a thief into your life but you also shouldn’t live like you are afraid of it every waking minute. You got a nice find there from your coworker @Randy Abercrombie !
Same here with the co-workers.They find coins for me. As a cashier, I also point out to customers every time I give them a star note. A quick explanation of what they are, what they could be worth, that they are bought and sold on eBay, and.....Voila.... a new collector is born. The condition of the bill doesn't matter in this context because it's always their first one. I have yet to give a star note to a customer who already knew about them.
Looking at that cup o' coins, the first thing I do is pull out the shield backs, into my front right pocket to use as change for buying good old coins which go into my front left pocket.
I tend to be more low key about the hobby with co-workers. There are a few with some interest in coins and I'll talk to them and answer questions directly, but try not to make it widely known what I have. I would love to share more, but I feel that the additional risk is not worth it. Others have a diff opinion. As long collectors are aware of the security risks, they can weigh the advantages and disadvantages and decide for themselves as to the level of interaction with others. What works for me may not work for you and vice versa.
