As a noob, my ego and my pride are as deflated as a New Year's party balloon- so here's my question:

What is meant by a "closed 3" coin? Does this refer to some defect in the #3 on a date - or something to do with the numbering font?

    Enlighten me please.

It has to do with the numbering font. The "3" on about 1/3 of the 1873 quarter eagles looks almost like an "8".
