Is it common for the mint mark, 'D' to be place so close to the year?
    Seeking info and knowledge.
    thanks to all

Mintmarks were hand-punched into the dies up until 1990, so you will find them in various positions even for the same year. I have seen a few with the mintmark touching the date, but as long as it is almost entirely below the date and does not obstruct part of the design, it is pretty much within mint tolerance.
