I have a Nickel that has a piece missing. Could it be a valid clip or is it a post mint cut made by someone.
That is what I call DEFDAM - Definitely Damaged Not a mint error of any kind. Not a Incomplete Planchet.
If it had been incomplete when struck, we'd see weakness on the rim opposite the missing piece. We also wouldn't see that ridge along the border of the missing area.
It looks like there is weakness in the rim between "E" in WE and "T" in TRUST. Unless it's my phone. Isn't there an incomplete planchet called a ragged edge?
I found a couple of really rare errors. Both a clad Peace Dollar and a Morgan dollar. You can see the copper core clearly due to the planchet clips. What do you think these are worth? Has anyone ever seen a clad Peace or Morgan Dollar before? Should I send these in to be graded. ICG does these, don't they? Z
Oooooh. There can't have been that many Ike planchets sent back in time to the 1800s to fall into the presses. Good find!
You don't know that. Stop demeaning auto mechanics. They take coin, they don't trash coin. Beer is expensive....
What the good people above are hinting at is that your clad dollars were clad when they were made in China, not in the US mint.
Those are not made of china. I've got some porcelain coins and they look different. They're brown and a lot thicker. Z
Yes, there is such a thing, but this one is not. Notice the edge, both obverse and reverse, is sightly rolled up by whatever cut it. If the planchet had been ragged before striking, the die would have made all the edges perfectly flat with the design of the coin. There is no way it could have turned the edges up.
Yes I agree with this , but if detach after the strike? and was and ragged crack planchet? Me I want to see the molecular separation on the side and then give my oppinion. Till then alls are right. On any cliped coins, the first think to study it is the side, and then you go further to see and attribute which kind.
Yes, a curved clip is from a planchet already being cut as the roll didn’t advance far enough. A straight clip is from a planchet being cut on the edge of the roll. A corner clip is cut on from the edge and end of a roll and a ragged clip is cut from the rough end of the roll. You can also have two or three clips. I’ll post some of my coins in a minute.
