clear mylar for uncirculated set were used for so many years and now it will be sealed in a blister and displayed in a folder. which one will most likely to damage the coins?. for clear mylar, it can be view any angle on those coins and prevent from damaging the coins. if you properly keep them with protection. but the new folder. i don't know. anyone?. my sense is that it will corroded the rim and become dark or black. otherwise it is a nice folder and good for displaying.

    2006 and 2007 uncirculated sets

i will buy 10 sets each of the 2006 and 2007 uncirculated sets. and keep it properly. i will check it after few years for any effect on those coins.

    2007 unc set

i received my mint unc set. it was terrible. it was just like choosing from the uncirculated roll coins. a little bit better only. that's it. will it be burnished?. i don't quite think so. maybe only the 2005 set first year issued is really burnished. why don't they use plastic case instead of cardboard?.

    for display only

i think the mint did it wrong again. the coins should have been in reverse position. so that when we want to display it. all the obverse will come out right.

    plastic case is better

using plastic case is still far better than those mylar and current cardboard. i hope the u s mint will change it again in the future. now the proof and silver proof set using three cases. the mint set can use four cases and charge a little bit higher for the cost.

damaged on 2007 mint unc set

i opened up all 20 set and found out more than half have problem. i hope the mint will change its holder to plastic case. just like the clad proof and silver proof set. we are willing to pay for additional cost involved.

In anticipation of the new Presedential proof sets coming, I pulled out my 2007 sets (3) and found on one set it looked like GW has some kind of skin contditon and on one James Madison had acne. I checked the set I got with my complete yearly mint set and it appears to be ok.

Should I get the coins out of the holder? Is anyone else experiencing this strange occurance. I really prefer mint sets but got these to pass on to the grandkids. I have a 68 mint set that has a little "tarnish" on several pieces but nothing like this.

Could it possibly be the beginning of toning? It sure would be a strange way to start that.

    Your guidance would be appreciated.

I found that one of mine has a nice big die crack. I like that kind of "problem coin".

    packaging

current mint packaging without using capsule to protect the coin is terrible. i hope the mint will continue to use capsule on all products.

What you are seeing on the President coins is the result of the metal they are made of more than anything else. Just like the Sackies the President coins are well known for spotting & unsightly toning. And there really isn't much you can do about it. About all you can do is replace them.

    toning

by then, the toning prez dollars will still be worth something within the unopen roll. isn't it?. afterall we can not see them. but if we open it. then, are those toning prez dollars worth the same price with uncirculated one?. they are all uncirculated in the first place. and everyone knew it can be easily tone. what's your comment?.

Well, typically the toning is quite ugly and few would want the coin. But toning isn't the big problem - it's the ugly spots the coins develop once they are exposed to the air.

Why do some of these coins "tone" and others do not? About a quarter of my Sacs and Prezs are "toned". I once remember reading something about the mint having problems with the quaility of the metal they are using.

Sackies and President coins have a protective coating (no explanation ever given for what it is exactly) applied to them by the mint in an effort to prevent unsightly toning and spots. But it seldom works.

It's not the quality of the metal, it's the type of metal - manganese brass. It's highly reactive.
