I don't clean my coins but when i take them out of their bags, there all in ziplocks, working on getting the cardboard folders for the older ones, i do this mostly on the new ones, to get the dust and grit from the other coins with them i will lick my finger with just saliva and then rub and then take a old shirt and dry it, i do this most on the Bicentennials since i have about 40 of them and all of them in the bag, should i not do this? can the saliva possibly hurt the coin? Thanks

That would be considered numismatic suicide. I would highly advise against this practice.

I was referring mainly to the cleaning.

BTW Buy some quarter rolls for the bicentennials. They sell them at books a million. MUCH better than bags. They will be little plastic tubes

Ouch, don't do that. I wouldn't use ziplock bags either, but that my preference.

obviously since i'm committing numismatist suicide, how do i get the dust (that is from the other coins from where they are in the same bag) off of the coin, i do/did know the bags should only be a temporary thing

gently wipe them with a microfiber cloth, and I mean gently.

Lightly brush the coin on your shirt...the dust should then be off.

Never rub the surface of a coin. It will leave hairlines. :hammer:

    Good god almighty!!
Stop doing that. Do you know of the germs that are on those coins? I remember when I was a kid I swallowed....ok,,I wont go into anymore details.
I would try oven cleaner next time...JUST KIDDING!!
I think the advise you got from the other folks should work.

If these are circulated coins you haven't done to much that will haunt you in the future. If they were MS coins they no longer are. Saliva is acidic and will tarnish your coins, so stop doing that.

Get some 2X2 flips. They're cheap in comparison to most storage media and they allow you to view them quite easily. Storing raw coins in a bag of any kind allows them to contact each other and that is BAD.

The longer you collect the better you "should" become about what is best and what you prefer to do to store them. Education is key so don't get into a big hurry, take your time and strive to learn as much as you can before you spend any real money on your collection. You'll be happier you did in the long run.

Have Fun, Enjoy and Keep on Collecting!!!

Thanks my collection was small until i got from my deceased Grandfathers collection salvaged from Katrina, i have looked in to the 2X2s and i knew the bags are problematic, i slightly need to know how to get the dust off before i put the older ones in 2X2s, and with the rest but the ones i do this to is usually circulated and can you please tell me what the MS stands for i know it is condition, i am clueless about grading

ice Just happy to be here

Ok you need to store the coins properly I would get some 2X2 you can get them pretty cheap from JP coin supply http://www.jpscorner.com/index.htm Get some pocket pages while at it. make sure they are not PVC pages as they will damage the coins. I think they are called Archival safe get a non PVC album and store the coins that way. Ice

Maybe you can just pop the whole coin into you mouth and use your tounge to remove the soot. :) Does this still sound like a good idiea?
