Cleaning ink from coins

Roll searching through half dollars I find a great many coins with a red or blue line from a felt marker on it. Some have a number written from a sharpie on it as well.

I had an extra, but empty, Kennedy half album that my 15 year old wanted to put together a collection. I have been saving AU coins I find when roll searching. There were two that were really nice, but had these ink marks on them. Well, this is what I did:

I took a q-tip and sprayed hairsray on it until good a moist. I then used it to clean the ink off the coin. On a flat field, it came out instantly, but in the hair, for example, it took some scrubbing. I then used the other end of the q-tip and dried it/wiped off all of the smeared ink from the cleaning. I then washed the coin off with water and patted it dry with a terricloth towel.

When done, I couldn't tell that there had been ink on it. The luster was still there. I don't know what this will do long term, but thought I'd share in case anyone else had a similar issue.

Please feel free to comment. :smile

I would say that when roll searching half dollars, on average 2-4 coins PER ROLL have ink on them.

Yes I find several of such. I went through a bag of halves this morning and saw lots of inky ones. Blue, green, black and even crayon. I just send those ones back to the bank.
