Hi, I bought this 1967 Canadian dollar on eBay yesterday because it was cheap and looked pretty. I don't have it in hand and I don't know much about foreign coins. Do you think it's been cleaned or polished? At least it has some silver content, which is mainly what I go for.
I'd say polished. I don't think the coin, in its original state, is nearly so reflective. but it could just be a product of the camera and lighting.
Actually the Royal Canadian Mint didn't offer proof coins till 1981. Assuming we are talking about the ones with frosted finish/relief. I believe the official term is called specimen. I'll have to double check with my Charlton Standard. This is the 1967 dollar and is probably uncirculated. So it's not unreasonable to believe this is the original state, unless you spot other signs of cleaning. I have a 1969 voyageur dollar that has the similar lustre. If I'm not mistaken the 1967 dollar does contain silver. (i'll have to check my Charlton to make sure) The current Circulation 1 dollar was not issued until 1987. But for a long time the mint has been minting 1 dollar for commemorative/and numismatic purposes. This belongs to a set that came out in 1967 for the Canadian Confederation Centennial. The whole set features Canadian wildlife 1c - rock dove 5c - arctic hare (i think), from all the examples i've came across, they usually have better lustre than any contemporary and even present nickel pieces. 10c - mackarel 25c - bobcat 50c - wolf 1$ - goose
more specs The 1967 set is indeed highly collectable. There were 963,713 proof-like sets minted in 1967. The issue price was 4$, the present market value of the entire set of 6 coins in PL-65 grade is 18$. A proof-like PL-65 single is worth 10$ (issue price 1.59$). The 1$ coin is 0.800 Ag, 0.200 Cu; mintage: 6,767,496 (141,741 were melted later) It was the last year the 1 dollar coin contained any silver. Market Values EF-40: $6 AU-50: $7 MS-60: $8 MS-63: $15 MS-64: $75 MS-65: $150 All values in Canadian dollars. Info from 59th edtion of the Charlton Standard.
Thanks again kvasir! I should get one of those books. I see some nice sets on eBay for US $15+$3 shipping, (Buy It Now). They are certainly pretty! I'm thinking about buying a set....
I was thinking of buying one, they are certainly handy when you specialise in a particular country. Unfortunately they get updated pretty much every year. The one I was using is borrowed from the library. I plan on renewing it until I max out the limit!
