Although coins of Claudius II are common, good quality portraits are scarce. This double denarius AE "VICTORIA AVG"reverse Victoria running, Mediolanum,268/70 AD, shows a portrait above average. Any other /better portraits of Claudius II are welcome.
Nice portrait, AND nice Victory on reverse too You're right about the abundance of coins minted in the name of Claudius II. Among them, only a few are outstanding The best I could find so far, unfortunately struck on an irregular flan, thus lacking part of the legends. Sometimes, one has to make choices.... Claudius Gothicus, Antoninianus Mediolanum mint, 1st officina, AD 268-270 IMP CLAVDIVS P F AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind. PROVID AVG, Providentia standing left, holding globe and cornucopiae. P at exergue 5.30 gr 18-21 mm Ref : RIC V, Part 1, 163, RCV # 11361 Q
I have an example of the OP type, with a very similar portrait. His Antioch issues don't always have the nicest of portraits, but I really liked this one:
Nice portrait. Claudius II (268 - 270 A.D.) Æ Antoninianus O: IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind. R: SALVS AVG, Isis Faria standing facing, head left, holding sistrum and basket; Є Antioch mint 22mm 3.37g RIC 217
Thanks, Q, the portrait was the reason I wanted it... I thought it was nice for the period known as the 'nadir of Roman coinage' .
Very nice coins everyone! I love the "humble" ants of Claud G. They are actually rather challenging to collect in decent grades - you have to look through hundreds of them to find the jewels. Here are Diana Lucifera, Aequitas, Genius, Iovi Victor, Liberalitas, Oriens, Securitas, and Spes, and these types are only the tip of the iceberg...
That's easily the best ant of Gothicus that's come through my store. You can see that, in general, the quality control at the mint was not great during this period.
Great portrait @PMONNEY ! I really like the Victory reverse - really depicts a lot of motion! Mine are more pedestrian... RI Claudius II 268-270 BI Ant Fortuna RI Claudius II 268-270 CE BI Ant Neptune Stndg dolphin trident
Many of the nicest portraits above share a similar style. I've always been fond of mine (despite the reverse), due to what I find to be a rather refined and realistic version of his portrait...
Nice coins everyone. My Claudius II is nothing special. It's very hard to find a good portrait of him (or Quintillus!). I'm in the market for a nice big provincial from Pisidia to represent Claudius II in my portrait series.
nice OP and nice coins all round! the portrait coins of Claudius ll are really fantastic. he was a general for two emperors and just ruled 2 years before dying from the plague
