I have what I believe to be a Claudius coin, but I am having trouble making CLAVDIVS AVG out of the obverse legend, (too many letters). Can anyone help, please?
@Cucumbor I believe that you are right. Gallienus for sure. I became tunnel-visioned and I couldn't get CLAVDIVS out of my mind. Thank-you.
You're thinking of the earlier Claudius, there. This one kinda-sorta looked like Claudius II ("Gothicus"). I'd love to see the old I, Claudius series again, though. Only saw the original broadcast, back when I was a kid, and didn't understand a lick of it. I wonder how well it has stood the test of time.
This is the Claudius of "I, Claudius" fame. I've read the book, but never seen the PBS series, it it worth watching?
Tremendously so. I wasn't into it initially, but my then-wife was, so we watched it. Not bad at all. Very good acting, of a theatrical type, not typical motion picture.
I see there are various uploads of it on YouTube but can't seem to find anything before Episode 6 that isn't "blocked in this country" for copyright reasons or some such. Watching some of that, I see how dated it looks, now, in the style of the acting, but I think @V. Kurt Bellman is right- it's "theatrical". Which is not necessarily a bad thing, if you're into that. Seems like Charlton Heston should be in there. Then again, the seemingly over-the-top acting is no worse than today's fare, which would have nothing but nonstop combat and testosterone and gouts of blood splashing across the screen constantly. I think video games and television have mingled too much in the last decade or so. But I digress. Exceedingly. @Topcat7 - sorry for rambling so far off-topic. Resume discussion of the coin in the OP, not the vintage I, Claudius or other TV shows.
Masterpiece Theater should have produced "I Claudius II" -- not a sequel, but a drama about Claudius Gothicus. And it should have starred Buddy Ebsen, because Claudius II sure looks like Jed Clampett on this one!
