Okay, so I bought this off eBay on an impulse, paying about $16.00 for it. It's not going into my Type Set and I don't really have a good reason to have purchased it except that I liked it (which I guess is reason enough). It has a cud, delamination, and a clash all rolled into one [edit] coin. It has some scratches on it that are PMD, but overall, I think the coin is a fun error coin and a cheap purchase to add to my collection. I do have one question regarding the rim towards the 2 o'clock; it seems odd to me, particularly on the last photo. I'm wondering if anyone can explain the uneven rim or provide me a link to read up on it? I'm hoping it isn't PMD. Thanks! @furryfrog02 @cpm9ball @SuperDave @Paddy54 @paddyman98
1) Clashed dies on 3 cent nickels are very common; 2) the rim is a cud, a part where the die broke off.
Yowzer. Ambitious coin. The obverse die is so far past its' expiration date that if it were food the vendor would get taken to court for selling it. Very little of the rim is not crumbled. At the bottom is granular deterioration in the denticles; full-on cud at CA in AMERICA; around OF is what I think to be crumbling of the lower part of the rim gutter, what we'd commonly call a "rim cud" in the truest sense because neither the field of the die nor the collar are involved.
Yes, this one took a beating for sure. I couldn't help but be interested in it. It's a pretty cheap example of some common errors all rolled into one.
3) the planchet is also uneven like a piece came off. The mint had real issues with striking copper nickel coins during that time, the FE cents, the early IHC's and the 3c and 5c coins are all notorious for striking issues.
For $16.00 I also would of snagged it. Again remember that the platchet was NICKEL /COPPER.....not silver. Even though it's a small coin nickel proved to be a real PIA for the mint. Dies wore out a lot faster striking in nickel. All I see from your images is what others have posted. A small cud part broken off, the clash, as well as mad somewhat, Love the full face clash on the reverse I have several and will buy another if the price is right. There's Longacre doubling on the lettering and that crack in the R is not pmd. I normally find die breaks at the top between 10 and 2 ,9 and 3 and again at 5 and 8 at the bottom . The 65 is also known for rpd from your image I can't get a clear image to make a call. Sweet xf/Au CN
Another point about these struck in nickel...look at the denticals it's crazy how you can follow around the rim and see how fast they change from perfect to disformed.
Well I'm a little happier after the responses. I saw it with just a couple minutes to go and decided to pull the trigger. It does have some PMD scratches on it, but nothing too distracting (considering everything else going on). I look forward to getting a clashed MS version for my type set.
Thanks Paddy, the price seemed decent to me and now I don't feel bad for burning up the rest of my monthly budget on this one. There are some scratches between the R and I leading towards the rim. They're not super noticeable, but they're there. Otherwise, I'd say it's around VF/XF (details) but hard to tell how strong the strike was.
I really like it. I love coins with strong clashes like this one. I would have picked it up to, but I don't normally look for trimes.
