Which do you think is the better investment. The 2004 clad quarter proof set or the 2004 silver quarter proof set? Ebay has the clad proof set for $11-$13. The silver proof set is going for $30 and higher. I missed out on the mint's offering of the silver proofs. That tellls me the silver is probably the better investment. Any comments or opinions will be greatly appreciated.
Recently, as far as proof sets in general go, the silver sets have all run laps around the clad sets even after accounting for the difference in issue price. I was lucky enough to start buying several Mint issues of each type in 1999. It had nothing to do with the State Quarters; it just happened to be when I started doing it. I've sold all but one of my '99 silver sets; at $250 a pop and a need to finance other lofty collecting goals, I figured I'd sell most of them. (I still don't understand how it can be so pricey, but I don't claim to be smarter than the market.) And while the quarter-only silver set sold out, the Mint is currently selling the 11-coin Silver Proof set (all coins, including the quarters) for $37.99 plus shipping.
Silver will always have intrisic value. No matter what else, it can always be melted. Overall, silver has always outpaced clad. But "DO NOT" buy coins for investments. Collect what you like, and buy it because you like it.
You're right ND. My main interest is Morgan Silver dollars. I've been working on my Dansco album for awhile now. I don't know why I suddenly got this interest in the Proof sets. I need to stay focused on the Morgans. I'm going to buy one 2004 silver proof set from the mint and leave it at that. Thank you ziggy for telling me about the 11 coin proof set still available.
