Any idea why this coin is considered a "clad" coin? Is it because it isn't pure silver? http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=68073&Lot_No=63319
The state quarters from San Francisco can be siver or clad depending on witch proof set it came from. Red proof sets are silver and blue proof sets are clad.
The us mint has been releasing the silver proof sets each year since 1992. These include all the coins that are found in the regular proof set, except that the half, quarter(s) and dime are 90% silver. These silver coins are not released into circulation.
Actually, I knew that but due to the timing of the printing of my comment and the wind chill factor we have to deal with here in the islands, I spoke more thinking of content than accuracy. Yup, I juss said words instead of thinking what I was saying.
I think that only the dollar in that set is silver. There were no silver half mount rushmores so I'm guessing that the other coins are clad also. Just guessing though because I don't own any prestege sets. Look on your COA to be sure.
You're right COA says they're clad only the dollar is silver . Thought if youre buying a prestige set you'd get silver coins , except for the commemerative half . rzage
Unfortunately, the US mint has not made any modern special mint sets with the silver coinage. The only two sets that contain silver coinage are the silver proof and silver premier sets. Too bad - it would be a great idea. I am sure it is only a matter of time. :smile
