Not sure if this is an error or not. This is the token that was part of the contest for week 37. I had only posted a tiny section of the token and changed the image to black and white. I just posted a picture of the entire token and noticed it was a little different than the one pictured in the 2005 Red Book. In the Red Book, the rope connected to the top of the anchor is on the right. On my coin, the rope is on the left. I'm thinking it's one of a few things... 1. mine is a fake. 2. there were several manufacturers of the real tokens and the design varied. 3. there were several different dies used and they differ. 4. other I think I covered all possibilities with 'other'. Any ideas?
Well, I do have a book with this token in it, but it doesn't give any specifics. The book is Coin Collectors Handbook by Fred Reinfeld, 1976. It also shows the token with the rope on the right. Mine shows the obverse with a flag surrounded by stars and the phrase "The Flag of our Union" Lets call yours "VAM-2" for now
I wish I knew more about these tokens. There's a local antique shop that's full of them. This was only a few bucks. The obverse looks like the image in the Red Book.
That helps. My book has 107 different CWT's in it and now, as I look a little closer, I see at least three with the ARMY & NAVY with anchor design. Sure enough, the one with the obverse like yours has the rope on the left. For a few buck a piece.....I'd buy them all.
You're welcome, but the real credit goes to cwtokenman. Together, Dave, and I, were able to pose the question. Thanks again, Dave.
