Picked up these two Lead double Karshapanas recently.. Thought I'd share them and any extra info welcomed.. There is a great deal of controversy over these coins as to whether they were from the Ananda Dynasty or the Chutas. Also the reading of the script seems to be all over the place....So I'll stick with Mitchiner's desciption. Here's an interesting link... https://coins.techcollections.info/...anavasi.html Top coin.. Thanks Paul
I was the underbidder on the top coin, so congrats Indian coins have a lot of mysteries, and I've been on a bit of a binge of them recently. I don't know enough about these to comment, but they are very neat! Here's a few oddball Indian coins, one of which I'm currently writing an article about: Mauryan punchmarked coin, Ashoka and successors, ~272 - 232 BC, GH VIb 570, 15mm, 3.38g Obverse: Arched hills, sun, six-armed wheel and other marks Reverse: Peacock on hill and steelyard weight, countermarked with three figures Rajuvula (Indo-Scythian King), lead double unit, ~AD 10-25, 5.68g, 18mm Obverse: Lion right, blundered Greek legend around Reverse: Heracles standing left, holding club and lion skin, arm outstretched Late anonymous imitation of Kushan style, Pakistan, 3.4g, 19mm Obverse: Stylized figure facing; sacrificing over altar in right field?; star or swastika-type symbol beneath legs, three dots at bottom Reverse: Stylized figure facing
Very nice! Are the coins that yellow-white color in hand? I was eyeing that one as well but decided not to bid on account of the fact that I've made WAY too many unplanned purchases this year. It's a very nice example of the type with an especially clear legend.
I can’t speak for anyone else’s coins, but the one I posted is just as yellow in hand as in the picture.
