well, i've got to cross several coins off my list lately, but haven't had time to post them or enjoy them much. i'll post them all on this thread when i can make some time for a needed pleasant distraction from an otherwise rough and busy time. 1. wanted a venetian soldino, so now off the list. not the best, but good for the price. still have a venetian grosso on the list. Rev: S MARCVS VENETI, Nimbate lion carrying banner. 18 mm 1.1g if anyone wants to post a venetian coin, or any 14th century coin, i'd enjoy seeing them. here's something interesting about the soldino if interested.. http://finds.org.uk/medievalcoins/denominations/denomination/id/170
atta-boy, chrsmat => man, I love those cool medieval coins!! (very, very cool) => yup, ya gotta love the lion carrying the banner (those crazy animal coins!!)
Here you go Steve. "I'm going cuckoo for animal coins" Don't mind me, I have too much time on my hands right now and I'm bored. lol

nice grosso! one of those is still on the list..so is one of those awesome knight coins stevex has. 2. ok, here's another i got to scratch off the list...a himyarite coin. had to use the seller's pics, it was really hard to get a picture of this coin....mine were all horrible. it's a neat little scyphate coin, i'm uncertain of aspects of it's attribution... himyarite kingdon 1st century AD quinarius? light drachm? hemidrachm? AR unit? i've seen all this listed. i assume we don't know what they were called and these are guesses. anyone know? i think i'll go AR unit unless i hear otherwise. o: male head right, surrounded by border of dots (serpent?), monogram left, what the heck is that far left? a bratwurst??? r: small head, monogram right? sabaean text..."MDN BYN RYDN" what does that mean? rydn i assume is raidan mint (that is almost always listed for this coins...some time the entire text is listed as a mint mark. 14 mm 1.4 g feel free to post your himyarites, i know there are a few out there.
wow chrsmat71, that's a super-cool hermaphroyarite!! (congrats) ... sadly, I don't have anything to add to your sweet thread ... => brother, you have been very busy lately (please keep those new coins comin'!!)
I call mine an "AR unit" and it weighs 2.15 grams. Your coin is apparently the same diameter but about 1/2 the weight of mine. ARABIA, Southern Saba' AR Unit (Light Drachm) 50 B.C. – A.D. 50 2.15 gms, 14 to 15.4 mm Obv: Simple diademed head left with symbols in fields. Pellet within crescent at top, beaded boarder. Lower 50% of beading is off flan. Rev: Bucranium (Bull’s head) facing with symbols in fields Grade: Near Mint, lustrous and properly conserved. Slightly off center on a small diameter planchet. Other: Found no listing in Sear for this Southern Saba / Himyarite coin. SNG.ANS.1516. The biblical kingdom of ‘Sheba’ (ca. 1200 BC) was the ancient Semitic civilization of Saba’ in Southern Arabia (modern day Yemen). The ancient Saba’ Kingdom fell after civil war resulting in the rise of the late Himyarite Kingdom. Ex Pegasi, from Allen Berman October 2013
that's one of the coins i was thinking about collect, that's a beauty! maybe i'll call mine an AR half unit? stevex, you better get shoppin' for a himyarite coin stat!
I haven't studied Himyarite coinage all that much, but it occurs to me that the economies of the Southern Arabian kingdoms were so far removed from those of the Greco-Roman world, that one would expect very different weight standards.
Yah you're 100% correct, I really should chase one of these babies, eh? ... sadly, this is the first CNG-Auction-Wednesday in a coon's age that I haven't sniped myself a victim ... I have zero new coins (worst month "ever") *rats* => the auction-estimate was $150 => my maximum bid was stupidly-high @ $555 => but sadly, somebody else had a bigger wallet than me and swooped-in and scoffed my precious!! ($575) NOTE => sadly, this is "NOT" a photo "MY" coin (this is some other lucky pup's coin ... oh, and by the way => congrats to the lucky pup who scored this sweet bull & serpent!!) ... yup, this a very cool coin and I'm positive that I'll have "shoulda/woulda/coulda" remorse when I think back on it!! (well played, it is a cool coin) .... *sigh* .... Oh sorry, chrsmat71 .... ummm yah, I had no other thread to post against, so I chose your cool thread, for I didn't think that you'd judge me for being such a complete coin-crybaby!!!
Wow Chris, love your new additions, i had a himyarites but traded it to Master noob.. The coin i traded to Anoob.. My Doge coin.. Had to get one of these after you Steve got one...

The ol' Domitian Denarius, eh? (good score, my friend => you ticked-off another one of the Twelve Caesars) I don't have too many of the 12 Caesars, but I do have a sweet Domitian to toss into your thread ... => please keep those new coins comin', my awesome coin-brother!!

i'm going to post the next two together, wanted an old school pre-mauryan coin and a mauryan puch-a-majig coin. got them both for 30 bucks on the same day. pre-mauryan gandhara anonymous 500 -300 bc (what a range? i've seen a top end of 600 bc may rival the kai yuan tong bao of tang china for longest run of a coin type) ar 1/8 satamana (satamana fractional unit?) o: septal radiate pastern with pellet. r: blank somewhat scyphate 15X13 mm 1.5g
and this neat little thing... anonymous? or Samrati Samprati? mauryan ar karshapana (series VI) 270-150 bc 17x14 mm 3.3 g here are the puchmarks, 5 obverse, 1 reverse... on my coins, symbol 5 ("barf cow") is lower left, 2 ("funky sun") upper left, 3 ("taxila hills") upper right, 1 ("sun") center left, 4 ("daphnia") lower right. looks like a daphnia don't it? reverse: pellet surrounded by 2 crescents and 2 arrow-type symbols (taxila symbol?) Mitchiner ACW 4195-4197 post your weird indian coins if you would like!
