If I had $150 laying around right now, I'd keep this quiet and bid on this myself. Unfortunately, I do not, and so what does one do when they find a nice coin but can't afford it? Share it with the group! Here's a decent looking Trade Dollar with a single chop mark in it and currently only 1 bidder for only $135. PCGS has it with AU details, chop marked. I see this as a great opportunity to get a historic piece without spending a fortune. Here's the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1875-S-Trad...846694?hash=item3d0c171e26:g:aTsAAOSwv-NWWL1N If you are reading this and happen to be that one bidder, my sincerest apologies!
Personally, I wouldn't be a bidder; photos are horrible and "tooled" on the holder can cover a multitude of sins. The chopmark looks more like damage and is not particularly interesting. Just my opinion, as always.
Yeah, PCGS doesn't label chopmarks as "tooling;" the coin has other problems and probably isn't far from retail at $135.
While I'm all for chop marks adding beauty to a coin instead of calling it damaged right away (Which i guess technically it is damaged no matter what), I would want one with a whole bunch instead of just one. Still a cool coin tho!
I don't think we can see whatever they called "tooling." Like I said, PCGS slabs chopmarked coins in regular non-Details slabs labeled "Chopmark." This coin has additional damage to get the "tooled" designation.
You mean like this? This is currently in my Type Set as it is my only Trade Dollar. I am fascinated by it but can't help but wonder if they used some of the chopmarks to hide actual damage on the coin. Either way, I'm happy with it and will keep it even after I upgrade it to an XF+ problem free one some day
Nice one Doc , I like a nice chop mark but only when they don't affect the beauty of the coin . Yours is ideal in it has nice distinct chops and they add appeal not distract to the original design .
