I have a problem. I am lookin to get my hands of a Leopold I coin and I have found 2 that I like, but for different reasons...just wondering...if you could buy one or the other of these two leopold (hogsmouth) coins, which would you go for? 1. I love this portrait (and that is a big plus)...it really shows the hog mouth and has good realism. Its well struck and not terribly worn. Good all around typical Leopold I coin. There is a crack of course and the reverse has some problems: Austria. Vienna. Leopold I (1657-1705). Silver 15 Kreuzer 1684. Choice XF. Country Austria. Reign Leopold I (1657-1705). Denomination 15 Kreuzer Date Struck 1684 Mint Vienna Obv: Laureate draped and cuirsassed bust right, value in Roman below. Rev: Crowned Imperial Arms dividing 16-84 at the top, min tmark below. Weight 6.32 gm. Diameter 29 mm Reference KM#1170 1. I like the protrait on this one but its more cartoony and the hogsmouth is not nearly as pronounced. Details on this coin are strong with real attractive toning. less of a typical Leopold I coin. I is also a more rare type than above: Austria Carynthia. Leopold I (1657-1705). Silver 15 Kreuzer 1663. NGC VF25. Rare Country Austria Carynthia. Reign Leopold I (1657-1705). Denomination 15 Kreuzer Date Struck 1663 Mint St. Veit Obv: Laureate draped and cuirsassed bust right, value in Roman below. Rev: Crowned Imperial Arms with oval state shield on chest and mint mark below. Weight 6 gm. Diameter 29 mm Reference KM#1302. Grade NGC graded and certified as VF25.
The design and detail of the first coin is definitely better executed. However, I don't like the crack (I do realize that it's hammered) and the second coin has the rarity thing going for it. Oh, I also like that the second coin is slabbed by NGC, but that's a personal preference.
I voted for number one, prefer the design. Shame about the damge though. Let us know what ya choose. :thumb: Both are very nice coins, though. :thumb: Phoenix
An austrian coin is worth less, not more if it is slabbed on the european market. I would go for the first one, you rarely see them quite that choice.
I would like to but I only have enough allocated for one Wish I could get a buy one get one free deal
Examples of the first coin will always be readily availabe, and most likely in better condition. Examples of the second coin will not be readily available. Go with the second
Okay, I think this clicked. I like the portrait on the Vienna more but you are right. The other is more rare...and it is simply an outstanding coin in great shape...I think you are right that not only can I find the first again as there are many out there for sale...I may even be able to fine it in better shape and cheaper...so I went for the Carynthia with the intention of getting a good example of the other down the line (I DO want a good example of that coin as I think the portrait is excellent)...thanks for the help everyone...seldom have I been so torn between coins...
