I have quite a few Chinese coins that were recently purchased in a huge collection. I have no idea of value. Can you cointalkers help me. I also have quite a few coins with square and round holes in them that are totally in chinese. Tom
The first one does not have a Republic Year date, so I'm assuming it is an Imperial Provincial issue from the late 19th Century or roughly the first decade of the 20th. I have so far been unsuccessful in locating it in either the 19th or 20th century Krause volumes. The second one is a 5.3g .820 silver 20¢ from Kiangnan province. There were 17 varieties of Y#143 minted by the tens of millions from 1898 through 1905, dated in the Chinese Cyclical calendar. An undated but otherwise similar Y#147 was produced with a 2,320,000 mintage in 1911. The pictures in Krause are not clear enough for me to pin down which variety you have, and I can't read the cyclical dates. If someone who can checks this out, he/she will either be able to identify it as the dateless Y#147, or narrow down the possibilities based on the coin's date. Value? At least $5, probably less than $125.
I agree. Mintage 828,000 (lowest of the series). In the 2008 35th Ed. it's valued at $4 VG. $12.50 F, $30 VF, $50 XF and $130 Unc. Of course those values are meaningless if erichejw is correct about it being a replica. The only other variety with that date, Y#143a.13, has the initials "SY" on the obverse.
