So every two years I get flung to some far off place for the Olympic games. (Okay, Salt Lake City wasn't so far off.) This time it's Beijing in a couple of months. I usually pick up Olympic commemorative coins from the host country and that has been fun. While I'm not a big world bank note collector, the wonderful collections shown here have gotten me interested in expanding into that realm, but I haven't a clue as to where to begin. One thing I do know is in keeping with my US paper collection, anything with 2 in it would be fun. Perhaps some of the more learned folks here could point out some things I should be on the look out for. I've heard that China has very stringent import/export laws on damn near everything but If anyone has special requests, PM me and I'll keep my eyes open. I'm putting this thread up early, so we all have some time to mull it around. Cheers!
We do have a member here who is Chinese so hopefuly he might respond to this post, Me I would say for you to look out for pre revolutionery notes, the designs are fabulouse on a lot of them. Hope that you have a great time over there as well :hail:
I was in China two years ago, I literally brought back 1000 note bundles of their small change currency from the 1950's, uncut sheets of paper money several gold coins, a couple of 500 year old cash coins, many modern commems in silver etc. There were coins for sale everywhere, but you have to watch for fakes of course. But there are legitimate dealers, even some government stores. If you are obviously hauling off some 400 year old 5' high Ming vase, you might be searched and questioned, otherwise keep your coins etc. close to you in your carry on and you should have no problem.
