Just got this beauty in the mail today...if you think it looks frosty in the photos you should see it in person!! It's in an old ANA slab... http://www.cointalk.org/gallery/files/6/7/5/6/WebDSC05213re.jpg http://www.cointalk.org/gallery/files/6/7/5/6/WebDSC05225re_513801.jpg
Okay, so, an old ANA slab. That was when they only had MS-60; MS-63 and MS-65. So, I'll guess MS-63. Those were the days ... (insert tune from Mary Hopkins' "Those were the days, my friend").
Iwould guess 63 also, but i must also say if it were resubmitted today it would be either AU or bodybagged because of the fingerprints.
OK, I'll push the envelope on this one and call it MS-65. There are very few marks in the fields and I don't think the fingerprints are that big of a deal (in my opinion). Actually, the fingerprints add a little character... Frosty it is, Daniel! Nice coin!!!
Thanks for your comments . Here are some more pictures I just took that show less of the mirrors and more of the toning http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w129/TopLineDmpls/Dollar/1879SDMPL/WebDSC05207.jpg http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w129/TopLineDmpls/Dollar/1879SDMPL/WebDSC05203.jpg http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w129/TopLineDmpls/Dollar/1879SDMPL/WebDSC05205.jpg
Nice coin - ms-63. The figure prints in the toning are a turn-off to me. I think this is one of those coins that the pictures just not do justice to. Still a nice frosty coin.
Old ANA MS63 PL. My personal opinion is MS64/65 DMPL on this one. Basically the only marks on this coin are on the cheek...the fields in the obverse and reverse are completely clear. Thanks for all your comments everyone!
The prints are mainly on the reverse. 8,9, & 11 o' clock positions. The odd thing is that they almost appear to have eaten through the toning.
I've seen this on several coins before and in person it actually looks kind of cool. It's actually hard to tell that they are fingerprints. The camera picks up everything.
