Some days I just hate Ebay don't you? Last night I had 48 snipes posted, I woke up this morning and I lost every single one of them, and 41 I was the underbidder on. I console myself that I jacked up prices across the board for people, but you would have thought I could have won a few of them. Ancients seem hot, I am winning not many auctions nowadays, and I like to think I know the market decently enough. I bid on interesting coins, maybe not high, but considering I was underbidder so many times it seems I am competitive just there is always one person willing to go higher. Bad day. I am really hurting missing out on 2, (count them 2) Chi Ro Urbs Roma's. It felt like they were already in my collection, and I have been chasing them for a few years now. Well, "chasing" is not the right word, I am not going to spend crazy money on them, but was willing to spend a few multiples of what a normal Urbs Roma goes for. Chris
They say misery loves company Please accept my condolences. Don’t you hate it when someone snipes your snipe. Here are a couple that got away from me in the recent past: http://www.cointalk.com/t157934/ http://www.cointalk.com/t146601/
Chris, Do you check "Watch Count" to see how many views an item has had and how many people may be tracking an item? It helps to know how many might be competing with you. http://www.watchcount.com/ Chris
I havent won jack for ancients on ebay in months. I only won 1 world coin a few weeks back & recently did a buy it now for 1 ancient but the general bidding on/sniping has been busts. I still comb ebay several times a day but thats as far is I have been going. Doesnt help coins I want are the more scarce/higher price stuff. Vcoins has been getting alot of my business. Now if Bargain Bin would post some romans, too many greek bronzes and Gallienus.
Well I won a 3 Cyrene coin lot recently, (I know Doug they aren't the greatest), but I really like Cyrenaica and they are extremely hard to find. I have one or two witht he Silphium reverse. These aren't but one has the "god" reverse, (cannot remember their god's name). I wasn't trying to complain, just its weird how you can get skunked like that. I have had 50 snipes closing before, and either I was way too low, or I won some of them. To be the underbidder on so many was just weird. I keep thinking of one dude out there just DOGGING me. Chris
Good site, thanks. The only downfalls I see to using this too much is: 1. It only takes one other dude to outbid me 2. Lots of other may do what I do and not watch the item, (afraid of adding to the watchcount ), but track sellers. I do agree I should go there look and track certain auctions I may be interested in. Thanks Chris
Cant say I bid much anymore either, for the same reasons. Recently (especially last night) allot of the coins on my wish list have been getting sold. Seems like allot of the nicer coins in the $100-$30 and the rare ones $30. These coins seems to be moving a bit faster lately. Even a little at the local shop
I use it now and then myself. Though often it dont matter if 30 or 4 are watching, still been having bad luck since july.
Ah, you have to keep bidding Randy. Hope springs anew. While I may be whining here about losing last night, I have also been known to score on 80% of my bids, (just not often lately). You simply never know how many real bids a coin will get. I do see a fairly sharp dropoff in quality on Ebay the last few years though. It used to be I could find a good lot once a week, and a great one once a month. Now the good ones are getting scarce, and I haven't seen a great one in years. Last one I saw was one back in 2008, 150 or so Syracuse byzantines, with about half the lot gVF or better. But, like I said, even though more crud to wade through than the past, there still appear nice coins. Bid on every one, cross your fingers, and you should get some. I search group lots a lot, and individual coins of better sellers, so you can always let me know what you are looking for and I can PM you if I see something, (hopefully we don't have the same tastes). Btw Chris, I am just curious, I am watching a lot right now with 17 watch lists. Is that a high or low number? I am expecting some competition. Chris
