So your going to a show...say the next big ANA and you only have $100 to spend and you are looking to find a nice variety or DD or, or, or... What would be the item you'd be looking for there? There is no wrong answer. This is your opinion. I'd think some would look for no S on some proof sets...some Vam's...some...well leave your reply and try to detailed if you would. Not just "I'd look for some Vams's" or "I'd look over some lincoln cents" Thanks for your reply's!
Buy all the 1999, 1998, 2000 and 1992, 92-D BU rolls Buy all the 1999, 1998, 2000 and 1992, 92-D BU rolls of Lincoln's and search for the close AM's and wide AM's, or if availible the 1982 small date zinc rolls for the doubled die reverse.
the 1964 accented hair kennedy half proof is pretty easy to learn the diagnostics for and just about every dealer seems to have proof 64 sets laying around. 1956-1964 type b and 1964-D type C reverse washington quarters are also easy to spot
First, go to the budget area. You won't get anything for $100 from the "regular" dealers. Big shows cost them big bucks for prime locations so they only bring top-of-the-line material. But the budget area dealers have most of their material in 2x2's and they have LOTS of that stuff. That's where you'll most likely be able to cherrypick varieties for under $100. Too many coins for the dealer to check each one even if they knew about the possible varieties.
Or for an 09 VDB with an S the dealer missed. I was with a friend at a show in Vegas about 10 years ago when he bought what was listed as an 09 VDB for about $12. When we got back to his place we were looking at it closer and swore we saw a faint S. He sent it to PCGS and sure enough, it came back an 09 S VDB. Not bad for $12. Guy~
I know that illini420 would have great success on this, but if you are a novice, study the photos very well!! Many have difficulty distinguishing the #1 die from machine doubling and conversely I know one who presented in another forum a 09vdb with machine doubling ( wrong side of date numeral) as a die #1. Also I would add, 1860 IHC and 1864 IHC (L) for the pointed bust style, which is easy to see even in well worn coins. I love to check the 3CN for RPDs and DD ( if you can distinguish 'Longacre effect' ) as there are fewer 3CN collectors than IHC. Sounds like a lot of fun! Jim
On the 1860 and 1864 IHC's it is just the tip of the bust that is missing? I have never seen what one of those look like.
I would be on the lookout for some of the more popular VAMs, especially that 1878 8tf VAM 9, I've been able to cherrypick 2 so far (1 at a show and 1 on eBay).
