According to this week's Coin World, there are people reporting 2010-D Sacs (Native American) dollars in mint sets without edge lettering. Good luck on the search. TC
Good for them! The edge lettering is an abomination, anyway. I hope the Mint has so many problems with the edge lettering that they scrap the program and put the date/mm and mottos back where they belong. Chris
I kind of like the edge lettering. If it was up to me I think I'd put a neat pattern and the denomination on the edge and on the Face of the Obverse would have the date/mm and IGWT. How come you don't like it Chris?
Because it looks sloppy. The placement of the lettering is random at best, unless you prefer one from "Column A" and one from "Column B" like in a Chinese eatery. Besides, it's much easier checking the date/mm on the face of the coin. coleguy......Dead Presidents don't need a lot of room! It's too bad the Mint doesn't employ some real artists. Chris
I'm with you on the dead pres's but I think a clean face and back would be nice if done with artistic flair. But I am affraid of what our PC world would come up with to put in place. And I agree about the date and mm that's why I like it like a 1799 Bust Dollar or a Old Large cent. You put the denomination on the edge.
I agree with Chris on the badly applied edge lettering but I love the idea of it. The early US coins did a better job of it and so did other countries who have used it. particularly Mexican coinage. The look of the "font" and the depth of the lettering is just weak on the Presidential dollars. It amounts to another missed opportunity for the US Mint to do a better job with this feature.
First thing I do when I get my sets in is to check & see if there is any absence of edge lettering. Nilcho here.......
I just found a 2010 Pierce dollar with upside-down lettering. Is this common? Regardless, I'm still amazed that I got three of them in change!
There's nothing unique about that old fellow. The coins are randomly fed into the good old "edge lettering" machine with no regard to the orientation of the coins. Proofs are another story however. Those are usually found with the lettering right side up when viewing the obverse.
Man, every Mint set or proof set I have ever gotten was full of perfect coins. lol Ditto with the new ones.
